Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: October 24-30

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for October 24th – October 30th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Cross Country:

The Emory University cross country teams will begin the postseason this weekend as they play host to the UAA Championships. The conference championships will take place in Hampton, GA on the Nash Farm Battlefield course with the women set to get underway at 11:00 AM while the men will run at 12:00 PM. The women come into the tournament ranked 21st in the nation, up four spots from the last poll, with three other conference opponents ranked in the top 25: No. 1 Chicago, No. 7 WashU and No. 23 NYU. The men come into the weekend ranked tenth in the nation, up one spot from the last poll, with four other conference opponents ranked within the top 30: No. 9 Carnegie Mellon, No. 12 WashU, No. 20 Case Western Reserve and No. 29 Chicago. Both the men and women are coming off of fourth place finishes at the 2021 UAA Championships with Carnegie Mellon winning the men's championship and WashU winning the women's championship. The women return one All-UAA performer from last season in senior Annika Urban who has won four consecutive meets to open the season in what is shaping up to be one of the greatest seasons in program history. The men return two All-UAA performers from last season in seniors Spencer Moore and Brett Lucas with Moore having set the program record for fastest 8k time this season running a 24:22.1 at the UAB Blazer Classic.

Volleyball:

After an impressive 3-0 weekend at the Emory Classic Tournament last weekend, the Emory University volleyball team is back in action this weekend as they play host to yet another tournament, this time the Emory Invitational Tournament. The No. 11 ranked Eagles (15-6, 4-3) will take on three SAA opponents beginning with Birmingham-Southern (17-5) on Friday at 7:00 PM before playing back-to-back on Saturday against No. 8 Berry (18-3) and Oglethorpe (13-9), respectively. The Eagles sport a 12-6 record against the Birmingham-Southern Panthers all-time with the Panthers most recently pulling out a four-set victory earlier this season. The Eagles are 22-4 all-time against the Berry Vikings and have already played once this season with the Vikings emerging with a 3-0 victory. The Eagles sport a tidy 29-7 record against the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels all-time including a current 25-match winning streak. Sophomore Sarah Luong has come on strong at the end of the regular season for the Eagles as her 102 assists this past weekend were a large part of the reason Emory was able to come out of the tournament with a 3-0 record.

Women's Soccer:

The red-hot Emory University women's soccer team enters into the most important weekend of the season to this point with thoughts of a conference championship on the mind. The No. 16 ranked Eagles (11-2, 4-0) are set to travel to Pittsburgh, PA on Friday for their match against No. 9 Carnegie Mellon (10-1-2, 3-0-1) at 3:30 PM before making the trek to Cleveland, OH to play No. 4 Case Western Reserve (13-0, 4-0) at 12:30 PM on Sunday. The conference regular season champion is likely to be decided this weekend as the three teams in action all sit atop the conference thus far. The Eagles are currently riding a 10-game winning streak which is the second longest in program history and two wins off of the longest winning streak set by the 1989 team. The Eagles will first take on the Tartans of Carnegie Mellon who Emory sports a 22-6-2 record against all-time and a current three match winning streak. The Case Western Reserve Spartans, one of two remaining undefeated teams in any NCAA division, have been dominated by the Eagles in the past with Emory holding a 31-1-2 all-time series advantage including three straight wins for the Eagles. Freshman Claudia Schmidt notched the first goal of her career when she knocked in the game-winner in the 77th minute of the Eagles game against Piedmont last Thursday.

Men's Golf:

After picking up its second consecutive tournament win at the DIII Golfweek Invite, the Emory University men's golf team is back in action this week, this time competing at the two-day Chick-fil-A Invitational in Rome, GA. The tournament is being played on the 6,724-yard, par-72 Stonebridge Golf Club course. Emory will open play on Monday morning and conclude play on Tuesday for the 36-hole tournament. The No. 2 ranked Eagles will send junior Logan Lowery, sophomore Prayaag Oruganti, senior Grant Drogosch, junior Tarun Hoskere and sophomore Nicholas Nautiyal to compete at the tournament. The Eagles are coming off of back-to-back tournament wins including the DIII Golfweek Invite where they beat out seven other teams ranked inside the top 10. Nautiyal helped the Eagles secure their first tournament win of the season at the Piedmont Invitational as he carded a 148 (81-67) which saw him finish in second place overall.

Men's Soccer:

The Emory University men's soccer team is set to take on two conference foes this weekend as the regular season winds down. The Eagles (5-6-4, 1-3) will travel to Pittsburgh, PA on Friday to take on Carnegie Mellon (9-3-1, 1-3) at 1:00 PM before moving East to Cleveland, OH for their matchup against Case Western Reserve (7-3-3, 2-1-1) on Sunday at 10:00 AM. The Eagles are 12-14-8 against the Carnegie Mellon Tartans all-time with their most recent match ending in a 1-0 victory for Emory in October of last year. Against the Case Western Reserve Spartans, the Eagles are an impressive 26-5-3 all-time with both of their last two matchups ending in ties. Senior Alejandro Gomez has poured in three assists over the past two matches which is a large part of the reason the Eagles have managed to win both of those matches.

Swimming & Diving:

The Emory University swimming & diving team will travel to Pembroke, NC for the UNC Pembroke Tri-Meet this weekend. The Eagles are set to compete in the tri-meet on Saturday at 5:00 PM against UNC-Pembroke and Barton College. Junior Megan Jungers was the lone Eagle to notch a NCAA B Cut at the Birmingham-Southern Dual Meet as she posted a time of 56.01 in the 100 Backstroke which also won her the meet. Junior Ryan Gibbons was one of five Eagles to post two individual wins as he registered the winning time in both the 1000 Freestyle (9:42.68) and the 400 IM (4:03.67).
