Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: April 3-9

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for April 3rd – April 9th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Women's Golf:

The Emory University women's golf team returns to the greens this week as they travel to Glen Allen, Virginia for the Stith Invitational on Monday and Tuesday. The 36-hole tournament is being played on the 5,600-yard, par-72 Dominion Club - Stith Course. Competing for the Eagles are the usual suspects: sophomore Sharon Mun, junior Irene Wang, sophomore Ellen Dong, freshman Cindy Wang and freshman Katie Park. The No. 1 ranked Eagles are one of seven teams ranked in the WGCA Top 25 Coaches Poll competing at the tournament along with No. 5 Carnegie Mellon, No. 6 Washington & Lee and No. 9 Methodist. Emory is coming off of sixth place finish at the Patriot Invitational where Mun turned in yet another top-ten finish, this time competing against primarily Division II competition, carding a 222 (72-76-74) to finish in a tie for tenth.

Baseball:

After winning its away series 3-1 over Case Western Reserve last weekend, the Emory University baseball team stays on the road this weekend for yet another four-game conference series. The Eagles (16-10, 5-2 UAA) will travel to Waltham, MA for a four-game series against the Brandeis Judges (5-12, 1-3 UAA) set to begin on Friday at 3:00 PM. The Eagles hold a 39-12 all-time series advantage over the Judges which includes a current 30-game winning streak which dates all the way back to 2009. These games will be the first that the Eagles have played in Waltham, MA in the two programs' histories. Senior Joey Bock had an impressive showing on the mound last weekend against the Spartans putting together seven scoreless innings and matched his career-high in strikeouts notching nine over the seven frames of work.

Softball:

After splitting its weekend series with Brandeis, the Emory University softball team takes to the road this weekend for another four-game series against a conference opponent. The Eagles (14-12, 4-3 UAA) will travel to New York City, with games played at the College of Staten Island, for their four-game series against the NYU Violets (14-8, 3-5 UAA) with first pitch of the first game set for 6:00 PM on Friday. The Eagles hold a 14-4 all-time record against the Violets with the two teams splitting the 2022 series as Emory took the first two games while NYU won the second two. Making an appearance in the circle in each of Emory's six games last week, freshman Mackenzie Duford allowed just five runs in 30 innings of work good for a 1.17 ERA on the week.

Track & Field:

The Emory University track & field team is back in action this weekend, their fourth consecutive weekend in outdoor competition, as they travel to Cleveland, Tennessee for the Lee Flames Invitational. The two-day meet is set to kickoff on Friday at 8:00 AM with the women's 10,000m run. The Eagles are coming off of the one day South Wesleyan GottaRun Invite where they continued to turn in standout performances. Sophomore Jackson Price continues to excel on the track as he turned in a time of 21.15 seconds in the 200m dash which is the second fastest time in program history and the fourth fastest time in Division III this season. The 4x100 relay team of sophomore Kaya Binetti, sophomore Dashiel Tao Harris, junior Clementine Bodus and sophomore Audrey Johnson placed second after registering a time of 47.91 seconds which is the seventh fastest time in the nation this season.

Women's Tennis:

After having its seven match winning streak snapped on Sunday by Middlebury, the Emory University women's tennis team looks to start a new win streak this weekend as they are set to take on two regional opponents. The No. 9 ranked Eagles (8-4) will welcome the Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies (15-1) to the Woodruff PE Center on Friday at 3:00 PM before traveling up the road to take on the Brenau Tigers (9-5) on Saturday at 1:00 PM for their last regular season match of the year. The Eagles are 4-8 against the Grizzlies all-time while they hold an impressive 28-8 record against the Tigers all-time, including a current 13 match winning streak that dates back to 2010. Freshman Emily Kantrowitz recorded a 2-0 weekend at the #2 singles position against No. 8 Tufts and No. 6 Middlebury winning both of her matches in straight sets.

Men's Tennis:

The Emory University men's tennis team had its six match winning streak snapped on Sunday but look to start a new streak this weekend with its final two matches of the regular season. The No. 8 ranked Eagles (13-3) will take on the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs (14-1) on Saturday at a still to be determined time in Athens, Tennessee before coming back home for a match against SCAD Atlanta (7-4) at 2:00 PM on Sunday. The Eagles are 2-2 against the Bulldogs all-time with all four matches having come in the last two seasons including an Eagles 5-4 win earlier this season. The Eagles have only faced SCAD Atlanta once before winning the lone matchup 9-0 back in 2015. Senior William Coupe was one of three Eagles to pick up a match win over Georgia Gwinnett this past weekend as he won his match 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 6 singles spot.
