Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: April 10-16

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for April 3rd – April 9th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week. The Eagles will be celebrating Division III week throughout the week with Eagle related content across all of their social media platforms. 

 

Men's Golf:

The Emory University men's golf team, coming off of its fourth tournament win of the season, is back in action this week for the Shoals Intercollegiate in Florence, Alabama on Monday and Tuesday. The 54-hole tournament is being played on the 7,060-yard, par-72 Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals course. The No. 1 ranked Eagles will be sending two teams to compete in the tournament with the first team consisting of sophomore Michael Burry, junior Jackson Klutznick, sophomore Tony Li, freshman Brian Hanson and sophomore Nicholas Nautiyal while the second team is made up of sophomore Josh Qian, senior Grant Drogosch, junior Tarun Hoskere, junior Michael Rosenbloom and junior Logan Lowery. Along with the Eagles, there are eight total ranked teams competing in the tournament including No. 3 Methodist, No. 4 Carnegie Mellon and No. 7 Piedmont. Showing out at the Jekyll Island Collegiate for the Eagles were junior Jackson Klutznick and sophomore Tony Li who each tied for third place after they both carded a 210.

Men's Tennis:

The Emory University men's tennis team got back into the win column last weekend with a resounding 8-1 victory over SCAD Atlanta and are back in action this week against a regional foe. The No. 7 ranked Eagles (14-3) will travel to Athens, Tennessee on Tuesday at 2:30 PM for a matchup with the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs (15-1). The Eagles have matched up with the Bulldogs four times before splitting those matchups evenly, however, Emory won the matchup between the two teams earlier this season by a match score of 5-4. Senior Andrew Esses recorded wins in both singles and doubles against SCAD Atlanta winning his doubles match 8-2 after pairing with graduate student Charlie James for the first time this season.

Women's Tennis:

The Emory University women's tennis team swept Brenau on Saturday and will return to the courts on Tuesday to face off against yet another regional foe. The No. 9 ranked Eagles (9-4) will welcome the Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies (15-1) to the Woodruff PE Center on Tuesday at 3:30 PM. The Eagles hold a 4-9 record against the Grizzlies all-time with Georgia Gwinnett winning their most recent matchup in February of this season by a match score of 5-2. Freshman Alyssa Margolin nearly bageled her opponent against Brenau as he won her singles match in the No. 6 singles position 6-1, 6-0.

Track & Field:

After splitting the team at two different meets last weekend, the Emory University track & field team will come back together to compete in the Berry Field Day Invitational in Rome, Georgia this weekend. The Eagles final meet before the UAA Championships will take place on Friday and Saturday with the first event set to begin at 3:00 PM on Friday. Senior Annika Urban cannot be stopped as she set her second outdoor program record this season, crossing the finish line in a time of 4:26.17 in the 1,500m run, which is also the fastest time in Division III this season. Senior Spencer Moore's stellar season continued as well as he posted a time of 9:06.53 in the 3,000m steeplechase which is the third fastest time in program history and the fourth fastest in Division III.

Softball:

The Emory University softball team will play its final home series of the season this weekend as they prepare for another four-game series against a conference opponent. The Eagles (15-15, 5-6 UAA) will welcome the WashU Bears (13-15, 5-7 UAA) for the four-game series with the first game set to get underway at 3:00 PM on Friday. The Eagles and Bears are an even 25-25 against one another all-time with the Bears taking last year's series 3-1. In the Eagles win over NYU this past weekend, senior Tyler Miller brought home the Eagles winning run on a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.

Baseball:

After a historic performance over the weekend, the Emory University baseball team is back in action this weekend for three non-conference games against a regional foe. The Eagles (20-10, 9-2 UAA) will welcome the Mississippi University for Women Owls (2-18) to Chappell Park for a three-game homestand this weekend with the first game set to begin at 12:00 PM on Saturday. These three games mark the first ever meetings between the Eagles and the Owls. The Eagles had a historic weekend against Brandeis setting multiple records in the progress including the two highest scoring games in UAA history as the Eagles scored 31 runs in consecutive games against the Judges on Saturday. The Eagles become the first Division III school to have multiple games scoring over 30 runs as the two games became the 10th and 11th instances in DIII history that it has occurred. Sophomore Jack Halloran was unstoppable as he went 13-for-18 at the plate over four games against the Judges which included 15 runs scored, 19 RBI and five home runs as he established four program records in the process.

Women's Golf:

After winning its fifth tournament out of seven total tournaments played this season last weekend, the Emory University women's golf team returns to the greens this weekend for the Kathy Niepagen Spring Fling in Normal, Illinois. The No. 1 ranked Eagles will take on some of the nation's top competition in the 36-hole tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Freshman Cindy Wang earned her first ever UAA Athlete of the Week honor for her performance at the Stith Invitational where she turned in a second place finish after carding a 147 for the tournament to help lead the Eagles to a tournament win.
