Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: April 17-23

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for April 17th – April 23rd. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Track & Field:

The Emory University track & field team will travel to Chicago for the UAA Outdoor Championships on Saturday and Sunday as the men look to capture their first conference title since 2015 and the women since 2013. The women come into the conference championship ranked ninth in the nation and third in the conference with No. 1 WashU and No. 3 Chicago ranked above them. The men enter into the weekend as the 27th ranked team in the nation with just No. 16 Carnegie Mellon ranked above them in the conference. Both the men and the women are coming off of third place finishes at last year's conference outdoor championships. Festivities will get underway at 10:00 AM on Saturday with four separate field events set to begin at that time. Senior Annika Urban's dominance is becoming commonplace at this point in the season as this time she set the third fastest time in the history of Division III in the 5,000m run as she crossed the finish line in a time of 16:06.95. Between the indoor and outdoor seasons, Urban has now recorded a top ten time in Division III history in four separate events this year.

Baseball:

Currently riding a seven-game winning streak, the Emory University baseball team heads into the final weekend of the regular season with a chance at capturing the conference crown. The Eagles (23-10, 9-2 UAA) will open the week with one game on Tuesday at home against regional foe Berry (15-19) before playing a four-game series at Chappell Park against the WashU Bears (25-8, 9-3 UAA) beginning on Friday at 3:00 PM with the UAA title on the line. The Eagles would win the UAA title outright if they go 3-1 or better against the Bears this weekend and will capture a share of the title if they split the series. The Eagles and Vikings have split their all-time series with each team winning 14 games, however, the Eagles won their most recent matchup earlier this season by a score of 12-3. The Eagles are an impressive 33-20 against the Bears all-time with the Eagles having swept last year's series between the two teams. Senior Henry Pelinski recorded a hit in each of last week's three games including a 4-for-5 hitting day against MUW on Sunday.

Women's Tennis:

The Emory University women's tennis team will open the UAA Championship on Thursday with a first round matchup against Brandeis. The No. 7 ranked Eagles (9-5) come into the tournament with the two seed and will take on the seventh seeded Judges (9-8) at 8:30 AM on Thursday in Altamonte Springs, Florida. No. 1 Chicago drew the tournament's one seed while No. 14 Carnegie Mellon and No. 13 Case Western drew the other top seeds. Should the Eagles defeat the Judges in the first round they will advance to the semi-finals on Friday where they will take on the winner of the first round matchup between the Tartans and No. 17 WashU. The championship match will take place on Saturday morning at 8:30 AM. The Eagles are a perfect 6-0 against the Judges all-time with the Eagles having only dropped three individual matches in their six previous meetings.

Men's Tennis:

The Emory University men's tennis team will begin its postseason run this weekend as they take part in the UAA Championship in Altamonte Springs, Florida. The No. 7 ranked Eagles (14-4) drew the four seed for the tournament and will take on the fifth seeded Brandeis Judges (11-6) in the first round of competition at 8:30 AM on Friday. No. 1 ranked Case Western Reserve drew the tournament's one seed while No. 3 WashU and No. 9 Chicago rounded out the top three. If the Eagles defeat the Judges they would move on to the semi-finals where they would face the winner of the first round matchup between the Spartans and the eighth seeded Rochester Yellowjackets. The championship match will be played at 8:30 AM on Sunday morning. The Eagles are a perfect 5-0 all-time against the Judges with their most recent match in 2021 ending in a 5-0 sweep for Emory.

Men's Golf:

The Emory University men's golf team returns to the greens this week for their final regular season tournament before the NCAA Championships in May. The No. 1 ranked Eagles will play host to the 54-hole Emory Spring Invitational in Conyers, Georgia that will take place across Monday and Tuesday of this week. The tournament will be played on the 6,905-yard, par-72 Cherokee Run Golf Course. The tournament will consist of 13 teams, six of whom are ranked including No. 10 Washington & Lee, No. 19 Averett and No. 21 Babson. The Eagles will be sending two teams to compete at the tournament with the A-team consisting of sophomore Michael Burry, junior Jackson Klutznick, sophomore Tony Li, freshman Brian Hanson and sophomore Nicholas Nautiyal. The B-team will be made up of sophomore Josh Qian, senior Grant Drogosch, junior Tarun Hoskere, junior Logan Lowery and junior Michael Rosenbloom. The Eagles are coming off of their fifth tournament win of the season as they captured a share of the title at the Shoals Intercollegiate last week after posting a 54-hole total of 862 (293-286-283).

Softball:

The Emory University softball team will play its final games of the regular season with one final four-game series against a conference opponent. The Eagles (15-19, 5-10 UAA) will travel to Pittsburgh for a four-game series with the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (14-20, 4-12 UAA) with the first game set to get underway at 3:00 PM on Friday. The Eagles hold a 6-2 record all-time against the Tartans with the two teams splitting the 2022 series 2-2. Senior Tyler Miller will play in her final regular season series this weekend and she has been instrumental for the Eagles this year leading the team in RBI with 41 while also hitting a team high seven home runs over the course of the season.
