Athletes of the Week

(May 31) Senior infielder Brandon Custer of Emory University garnered All-Tournament Team honors after helping the Eagles to a runner-up finish at the 2007 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship in Fox Cities, WI.  Custer finished as the fourth-leading hitter in the tournament with a .474 batting average in six games played, batting 9-for-19 with six runs scored, five runs batted in, and five walks.  He hit 3-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI in a 16-7 triumph over top-ranked Chapman University, batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored in a 6-3 win over the State University of New York at Cortland, then hit 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI in an 18-7 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to help Emory move into the championship game against Kean University, where they dropped a 5-4 decision in ten innings.

(May 31) Emory University senior pitcher Jason Glushon capped his collegiate career with All-Tournament Team accolades after helping the Eagles to a runner-up finish at the 2007 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship in Fox Cities, WI.  With 14 innings pitched (two games) in tournament play, Glushon finished with a 1-1 record and a 1.19 earned run average, yielding 16 hits, five runs (three earned), and three walks while striking out 12 batters, second only to tournament leader and teammate Ian Ganzer (15).  He picked up the hard-luck loss in a 2-1 defeat to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, giving up only one earned run with five strikeouts in eight innings.  His victory came in a 6-3 triumph over the State University of New York at Cortland, tossing six innings with seven strikeouts while giving up eight hits, three runs (two earned) and no walks.


(May 21) Emory University third baseman Frank Pfister was named the Most Valuable Player in the NCAA South Regional Tournament, after batting .640, and helping the Eagles earn a trip to the Division III College World Series.  Pfister went 16-for-25 during Emory's five games, swatting four doubles, knocking in five runs, and scoring seven of his own.  The junior played stellar defense as well, recording a number of diving stops at third base, while recording a tournament-best 23 assists.  After his performance at the tournament, Pfister raised his season average to a team-best .390 average, with 43 runs batted in and 47 runs scored.  The victory at the South Regionals allows the Eagles to advance to the World Series for the third time in school history.


(Apr. 30) Emory University starting pitcher Ian Ganzer pitched 12.1 innings last week without allowing an earned run, en route to picking up two victories.  Against Maryville College (Tenn.), Ganzer struck out 10 batters over seven innings, while allowing just three hits.  The senior followed up that performance with five and one-third innings against the University of Dallas (Texas), during which he allowed two hits (both bunt singles) and no earned runs, despite pitching on just three-days rest.  During the two games, Ganzer struck out 14 batters, while issuing two walks and five hits.  During the 2007 campaign, he has compiled a career-best 7-1 record with a 2.18 earned run average, helping the fourth-ranked Eagles to a 34-7 record.


(Apr. 23) Emory University's David Hissey picked up a number of timely hits for the third-ranked Eagles this week, helping the team to a 2-2 record during the week.  Hissey batted .450 (nine-for-20) in the leadoff spot for the Eagles, scoring three runs and driving in four.  Against Maryville College (Tenn.) on Saturday, the leftfielder recorded a team-record five hits, driving in three runs and scoring one, including a 14th-inning RBI single that helped Emory to a 12-7 win.  Against Maryville on Sunday, with the game tied in the top of the ninth inning, Hissey singled with two outs, stole second base and scored the game-winning run on a base hit.  The junior is now batting .363 this season with 32 runs scored and 23 stolen bases during the 2007 campaign, helping the Eagles to a 31-7 overall record.


(Apr. 16) Emory University's Dan Molnar hit .667 during four games last week, knocking in three runs and scoring six of his own.  The freshman was a bright spot in the Eagles' 8-3 loss to the 30th-ranked Rhodes College (Tenn.), going two-for-three with an opposite field solo home run, and a triple.  Molnar drew a walk as well, and scored all three of the Eagles' runs during the game.  Against Oglethorpe University (Ga.), Molnar went two-for-two with two runs, two RBIs, two walks and two stolen bases.  The outfielder is now hitting .310  this year, while leading the team with three home runs and three triples, along with 28 runs scored and 14 RBIs during his inaugural season on the team.  Molnar's performance helped the third-ranked Eagles to a 3-1 record last week, and a 29-5 record overall in 2007.


(Apr. 9) Emory University's Joe Roth hit .417 with nine runs batted in and two home runs during four Eagles' games last week.  While going seven-for-17 during the week, the junior also drove scored five runs with a double and stolen base as well.  In a 23-3 rout of the University of the South (Tenn.), Roth went three-for-five with a pair of home runs, six RBIs and three runs scored.  The second baseman followed up his performance with a successful day against Greensboro College (N.C.), helping Emory to a 7-6 win on Friday with a three-for-five performance, along with a double, a run and an RBI.  Roth is now hitting .363 with a team-leading three home runs and 31 RBIs during 2007, helping the Eagles to a 26-4 record.


(Apr. 2) Emory University second baseman Joe Roth hit .353 last week to help the fourth-ranked Eagles to three victories in four games.  He went a team-best six-for-17 during the four games, including two doubles.  The junior also recorded five RBI and scored four runs during the week.  Roth is now hitting .354 this season with 22 runs batted in, and has helped Emory to a 22-4 record during the 2007 campaign.


(Mar. 26) Emory University's Steve Bralver recorded 12 RBIs and a .529 batting average over the course of four Emory baseball games last week.  Bralver went nine-for-17 during the week, including five doubles and a triple, and scoring six runs of his own.  Against Piedmont College (Ga.) on Saturday, Bralver went three-for-four with two doubles and a triple, knocking in four runs and scoring four.  On Friday against Piedmont, the sophomore went two-for-five with four RBIs.  Bralver had at least two RBIs in each of the Eagles' four games, and now leads the Eagles with 26 RBIs in 2007.  He is also second on the team with a .392 season batting average.  Bralver's performances helped Emory to a 4-0 week, bringing the 19th-ranked team in the nation's record to 19-3 this season.


(Mar. 12) Emory University third baseman Frank Pfister hit .529, driving in six runs and scoring seven during four Eagles games last week.  Pfister went 9-for-17 during the stretch, including three doubles and two stolen bases.  Against Christopher Newport University (Va.), Pfister went three-for-four, with a double and two stolen bases, and scored the lone run in a 1-0 Emory victory.  Pfister came back the next day, turning in a four-for-five performance against Franklin and Marshall College (Pa.), driving in three runs and scoring four, helping the Eagles to a 11-1 victory.  Pfister leads the Eagles this season with a .440 batting average, 13 runs scored and 11 runs batted in.  The junior is part of an Emory team, ranked 19th in Division III baseball, that has started its 2007 season with an 11-1 record.


(Mar. 5) Jason Glushon, starting pitcher for the 19th-ranked Emory Eagles, allowed just one run on four hits over eight innings pitched against 13th-ranked Millsaps College.  Glushon picked up his third win of the season in the game, striking out four batters against the fourth-best scoring offense in Division III baseball last season.  The senior is 3-0 so far this season, has pitched at least eight innings in each of his three starts, and has not issued a walk in 25.1 innings pitched this year.  With Glushon's help, the Eagles split a weekend series with Millsaps, improving to 7-1 this season.


(Feb. 26) Emory University outfielder Steve Bralver hit .545 with a home run, five runs scored and three runs batted in, helping the Eagles to their second-consecutive Rawlings Southern Classic title.  In the tournament's opening game against Virginia Wesleyan College on Friday, Bralver scored three of Emory's four runs, going 2-for-2 and reaching base four times during the game.  The sophomore followed that performance with a 3-for-5 game against York College (Pa.) on Saturday, including a run scored and an RBI.  Bralver capped off the tournament with a two-run homer against York on Sunday, helping Emory to a 7-6 win in ten innings.  The Eagles, ranked 19th in the nation, finished first in the Rawlings Southern Classic, improving to 5-0 during the 2007 campaign.


(Feb. 19) Emory University starting pitchers Jason Glushon and Ian Ganzer combined to allow one earned run in 17 innings pitched, guiding Emory to two wins against Methodist College (N.C.) in the team's opening weekend.  Ganzer did not allow an earned run, while picking up a complete-game victory on Sunday.  He allowed just five hits and struck out eight in the 3-2 Emory win.  The day before, Glushon allowed one earned run on five hits over eight innings, helping the team to a 3-2 victory as well.  The pair of senior starters led Emory to its eighth 2-0 start in the past 17 seasons.
