2012 Emory Baseball Athletes of the Week

    (Baseball) Emory University senior Paul Schwendel struck out 11 batters and allowed just one earned run during the Eagles’ 2-0 NCAA Tournament loss to 22nd-ranked DePauw University. Schwendel surrendered just five hits and a walk over his eight innings pitched, throwing his third complete game of the season.

    (Baseball) Emory University freshman Matt Kohn hit his first career home run during the Eagles’ 5-4 loss to Division II North Georgia College and State University on Wednesday. With the game tied 2-2 and one out in the top of the eighth inning, Kohn, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning, hit a go-ahead solo home run over the left field wall to put the Eagles in front in the game.

    (Baseball) Emory University sophomore Matt McMahon limited Division II North Georgia College and State University to just one run on four hits over four innings of work on Wednesday. During the 64-pitch effort, McMahon struck out three batters, while walking just one leaving the game with a 2-1 lead after four innings.

    (Baseball) Emory University senior Paul Schwendel struck out 11 batters over seven innings to earn his sixth win of the season, during the Eagles’ 7-4 win over Oglethorpe University on Saturday. Schwendel scattered nine hits and three walks in the game, limited the Stormy Petrels to just two earned runs and four total runs during his 118 pitch effort.

    (Baseball) Emory University sophomore catcher Jared Welch led all Eagles with a .500 batting average (five-for-10), in addition to a home run, seven runs scored, three runs batted in, six walks and two stolen bases in as many attempts during three wins last week. Welch, who now has a 15-game hitting streak, recorded a slugging percentage of .800 and an on-base percentage of .688 during the week.

    (Baseball) Emory University’s Connor Dillman matched the program’s record for wins by a freshman, earning his seventh victory of the season with seven shutout innings against Oglethorpe University during a 9-2 win on Thursday. Dillman allowed just four hits and two walks against the Stormy Petrels, striking out nine during an 84-pitch effort.

    (Baseball) Emory University junior leftfielder/ designated hitter Daniel Iturrey hit .600 (six-for-ten) with a team-high five RBIs and five walks during three games last week. Iturrey also recorded a .733 on base percentage and a .600 slugging percentage with five runs scored over the three games.

    (Baseball) Emory University senior Paul Schwendel did not allow an earned run during his second-straight complete game, leading the Eagles to a 7-2 win over Covenant College on Saturday. Schwendel carried a shutout through eight and two thirds innings in the game before allowing a pair of unearned runs with two outs in the ninth inning, en route to the victory.

    (Baseball) Emory University sophomore catcher Jared Welch hit .389 with a double and three RBIs over four games for the Eagles last week. Welch was seven-for-18 during the week, adding on a team-high five runs scored, stealing a base, and throwing out three of the four runners that attempted to steal against him.

    (Baseball) Emory University junior Mike Bitanga recorded a win and a save while not allowing a run over five innings against two ranked opponents last week, tying the school record for career saves. Bitanga pitched the final three and a third innings against sixth-ranked Piedmont College on Sunday, entering the game with a three-run lead.

    (Baseball) Emory University junior outfielder/ designated hitter Daniel Iturrey hit .429 with a team-high seven RBIs and two home runs during four games against nationally-ranked opponents last week, helping the Eagles to a 3-1 record. Iturrey hit his first-career home run during the Eagles’ 17-9 win over sixth-ranked Piedmont on Saturday.

    (Baseball) Emory University freshman Brett Lake led all Eagles in hits, batting average, runs scored, RBIs and stolen bases during two team victories last week. Emory’s leadoff hitter batted .556 (five-for-nine) with three runs scored and three runs batted in, along with two stolen bases against Huntingdon College.

    (Baseball) Emory University freshman Connor Dillman finished the UAA Championships with a 2-0 record and a 1.69 earned run average over two starts. Dillman recorded the first complete-game shutout by an Emory pitcher in nine seasons during the Eagles’ tournament-opening 6-0 win over Brandeis University.

    (Baseball) Emory University sophomore Brandon Hannon led all players at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships with a .520 batting average during the eight-game tournament. Hannon was 13-for-25 with a tournament-high 10 runs scored and .639 on base percentage, while a UAA Championship record with 10 walks.

    (Baseball – Hitter) Emory University freshman Brett Lake led the Eagles with a .429 batting average (six-for-14) during three games last week. Hitting leadoff for Emory in all three games, Lake also led all Eagles in RBIs (three) and stolen bases (four) during last week’s action.

    (Baseball – Pitcher) Emory University senior Connor McGuiness did not allow a hit in a pair of relief appearances for the Eagles last week, walking one batter and striking out three of three and a third innings pitched. During a 7-5 loss to Huntingdon College on Wednesday, McGuiness allowed just one base runner on a hit-by-pitch.

    (Baseball) Emory University freshman Connor Dillman was 1-1 with a 2.19 earned run average during a pair of starts last week, the first two of his collegiate career. On Tuesday, Dillman guided the Eagles to a 5-2 win over Washington and Lee University, allowing just one unearned run on six hits and two walks over six innings, while striking out six batters to earn the victory.

Hannon was two-for-four with a pair of doubles, a run scored and an RBI during a 5-2 win over Washington and Lee University on Tuesday.

Entering the game with the score tied at 3-3 in the top of the eighth inning, Bitanga proceeded to allow just one hit and one walk while striking out three batters.

    (Baseball – Pitcher) Emory University junior Mike Bitanga earned two saves during a pair of team victories over Berry College and 23rd-ranked Birmingham-Southern College on the opening day of the season on Friday. During a 7-4 win over Berry, Bitanga entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with one out and the tying run at the plate, and proceeded to get the next two batters to strikeout and fly out to secure the Eagles’ victory.

    (Baseball – Hitter) Emory University sophomore catcher Jared Welch hit .571 (four-for-seven) with two doubles, five runs scored and four stolen bases during two Eagle victories on opening day on Friday. During a 7-4 win over Berry College, Welch was two-for-three with a double, three runs scored, an RBI and three stolen bases, in addition to drawing a pair of walks.
