LaGrange Deals Emory Baseball Home Loss in Matchup of Top-Five Programs

The No.-5/4-ranked LaGrange College Panthers handed the No.-3/5 Emory University Baseball team its third consecutive loss Tuesday afternoon as the Panthers came away with the win, 9-4, in the showdown between two of the top programs in Division III.

The loss snapped Emory's 13-game winning streak at Chappell Park dating back to last season. The Eagles now sit at 17-5 overall. The Panthers have now rattled off nine straight and 17 out of 18 to improve to 23-2.

LaGrange belted out nine runs on 17 hits while the Eagles managed four runs on 12 hits. Each club left 11 runners on base. Casey Bell paced the LC offense going 3-for-4 with a game-high four RBIs. For Emory, junior Bubby Terp collected three hits, going 3-for-5 with a double, with one RBI. Senior Chris Young finished the day 1-for-5 with one RBI, pushing his team-leading hitting streak to 13 games.

Senior Jackson Weeg was tagged with eight runs (5 ER) on 10 hits and two walks in 5.1 innings pitch to fall to 3-3 on the season. Austin Brown pitched 1.2 in relief, allowing two runs on four hits to move to 3-0.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of first, the Eagles went in front with two of their own. Terp singled through the right to plate senior Wilson Morgan before senior Brian Hernandez scored as classmate Jeff Ronpirin reached on a fielder's choice to short.

After stranding five runners between the third and fourth innings, Emory struck for two in the fifth to cut the deficit to 5-4. Hernandez scored on an infield single by Young with Terp coming around later in the inning as sophomore David Draper reached on a fielder's choice.

LaGrange responded with three runs on three hits in the sixth however to seal the victory.

The Eagles look to stop the skid this weekend as University Athletic Association foe, Case Western Reserve University, travels to Atlanta for the start of conference play.
