Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep of Maryville

Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep of Maryville

The Emory University baseball team completed the sweep of Maryville College Sunday afternoon, defeating the Scots by a count of 8-5 in the series finale from Chappell Park in Atlanta.

The Eagles scored eight runs for the second consecutive game as they ran their season record to 9-6. Maryville slips to 6-4 following the loss.

The Eagles did most of their damage in the early goings, posting three runs in the second followed by a four-run fourth as Emory led 7-2 after four innings.

Senior Zeke Diamond drove in a team-best three runs in a 1-for-4 day with his big hit coming in the fourth as he had a bases clearing double. Junior Ellis Schwartz collected two hits, two RBI and two steals in the two hole and at the top of the lineup, Jack Masonis went 2-for-5 and swept a bag.

On the mound, Matthew Culbert registered his first win of the year, working 2.1 innings in relief of senior Jack Brodsky who started for the Eagles. Brodsky took a no decision as he struck out six in four innings, allowing two runs on seven hits.

Senior Kyle Sulkowski made his third appearance of the weekend as he slammed the door for another save. Sulkowski entered a two-on, one out situation in the eighth and promptly sent down all five batters he faced over the final two innings and struck out two.

Emory is scheduled to travel to No. 3 ranked Birmingham-Southern Tuesday night before starting a three-game series with Piedmont University this upcoming weekend.
