Oglethorpe Rallies Late to Upend Emory Baseball

A stunning comeback in the late innings saw Oglethorpe University upend the Emory University baseball team in game one of the series Saturday afternoon at Chappell Park in Atlanta.

The Stormy Petrels scored four runs in the final two innings including three runs in the ninth to defeat the Eagles 6-4. With the defeat, Emory falls to 11-8 while Oglethorpe moves to 8-9.

Emory led 4-0 through five innings as senior Jack Moore was in cruise control on the mound. Moore carried a shutout into the sixth before running into trouble, allowing the first two OU runs to cross the plate. He settled for a no decision in the outing, going 5.1 innings with four strikeouts as he gave up two runs on five hits and a walk.

Senior Robby Wacker delivered the first two runs of the game for the Eagles, plating Jack Masonis with a run-scoring ground out in the first and then scored Zeke Diamond with a single to start Emory's three-run fourth. Henry Pelinski followed Wacker with a triple to right before he scored on a sac fly by Tyler McLoughlin.

Oglethorpe cut the Emory lead to one with a run in the eighth as OU manufactured the score with a HBP, stolen base and then back-to-back ground outs.

Two of the first three batters reached to start the ninth before the tying run scored on fielder's choice and error on a play at second. Rajan Sampat rolled over the ball to second that the Emory defense tried to turn two on to end the game. Unfortunately, a throwing error at the second base bag allowed the tying run to come home before Jonathan Cruz came through two batters later with the go-ahead two-run single that clinched the game.

After scoring in the early innings, Oglethorpe's Colby James and Jake Hill combined to send down 16 of 17 Emory batters they faced prior to a two-out rally in the ninth when McLoughlin walked and Jack Halloran following with a double. Walker Woolf stepped to the plate with a chance to tie the game but Hill got him to ground out to second for the final out.

The two teams will conclude the three-game series Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader in Brookhaven.
