Emory Baseball Splits Final Day at CWRU

Emory Baseball Splits Final Day at CWRU

The Emory University baseball concluded its UAA series at Case Western Reserve University with a doubleheader split on Sunday in Cleveland.

The Eagles claimed a one-run victory in the first game of the afternoon before CWRU rallied late in the second contest to avoid the sweep.

Following the weekend, Emory leads the UAA standings with a 5-2 record and are 16-10 overall. For the Spartans, they stand at 3-5 in UAA action and 11-11 on the year.

Game 1: Emory 8, CWRU 7

A five-run inning in the fifth was the turning point in the first game of the afternoon as the Eagles grabbed a one-run win. Senior Henry Pelinski had a career day with a 3-for-4 outing with a double, home run and five RBI.

Sophomore Ryan Reynolds won his fourth game of the year, working through 5.2 innings while striking out a season-high seven batters. Junior Tyler McLoughlin was flawless out of the pen, facing the minimum nine batters in three scoreless frames for the save. He struck out three.

Trailing 4-2, the Eagles broke through with a five spot in the fifth inning to take the lead. Pelinski brought the tying runs in with his two-run double with sophomore Matthew Sicoli plating Pelinski with the go ahead run in the next at bat. Emory would tack on two more runs in the frames thanks to two CWRU defensive miscues.

Pelinski added another RBI in the sixth, proving to be the difference as the Spartans scored three in the bottom of the sixth. However, McLoughlin only allowed a leadoff walk in the eighth as he kept it an 8-7 game across his three innings en route to collecting his fourth save of the year.

Game 2: CWRU 7, Emory 4

The Spartans avoided the sweep in the final game of the series, scoring four runs in the eighth to erase a one-run deficit and win. The eighth was a pivotal inning in the finale, as the Eagles took the lead in the visitors half before CWRU answered with four in the bottom half.

Freshman Zach Wasserlauf brought home a run to tie the game at 3-3 with a chopper in front of the pitcher. Sophomore Josh Katz then forced home the go-ahead run with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch.

Four straight Spartans reached with one out in the home half, tying the score at four, before Owen Levinson dropped a single in front of a diving Ellis Schwartz to score the eventual game-winning run.

Junior Jacob Grossman had a game-high three hits for the Eagles, going 3-for-5 with a double and RBI.

The Eagles continue the UAA slate next weekend as they travel to Waltham for a series with Brandeis University beginning Friday afternoon.
