Emory Baseball Powers Past Brandeis, 12-1, in Opener

The Emory University baseball team used three home runs and another impressive pitching performance from senior Aaron Mishoulam to power past Brandeis University, 12-1 in seven innings, Friday afternoon in Waltham, Mass.

The second half of the UAA schedule started in fine fashion for the Eagles as they won their third mercy rule game of the conference slate. With the win, Emory improves to a UAA-leading 6-2 and now stands at 17-10 on the season. Brandeis meanwhile drops to 5-14 overall and is now 1-4 in conference play.

Mishoulam continues to deal, winning his sixth straight decision while setting another career-high in strikeouts. After a seven inning and nine strikeout performance at Case Western Reserve last weekend, Mishoulam was even better on Friday against the Judges. He spun six frames of one-run ball and racked up 11 strikeouts, the most by an Eagles this season. Mishoulam did not allow an extra base hit and walked one. He now stands at 6-2 on the year, now currently one win behind the Division III lead.

To go along with Mishoulam's stellar on the mound, the offense continued to mash as the Eagles scored plated 10 or more runs for the tenth time this season. Emory scored in all but the first and seventh innings with the bottom half of the lineup doing the damage in the series opener.

Freshman Zach Wasserlauf opened the scoring with a RBI single in the second before senior Henry Pelinski, senior Steven Hunt and sophomore Jash Katz all followed with RBI to give Emory a 4-0 lead. Sophomore Matthew Sicoli added to the scoring with a two-run single in the fourth as part of the Eagles' four spot in the inning.

From there, junior Tyler McLoughlin, Hunt and sophomore Jack Halloran supplied the power that led to another shortened win via the mercy rule. McLoughlin belted his conference-leading eighth home run in the fifth before Hunt followed two batters later with a solo shot of his own. The final blow came in the sixth as Halloran delivered a grand slam, his fourth home run of the season that provided the final margin.

The series continues from Waltham on Saturday with a doubleheader getting underway at 12:00 PM.
