Emory Baseball Sets UAA Wins Record with Shutout of WashU

The Emory University baseball team capped off the series sweep of the WashU Bears on Sunday, winning the finale by an 8-0 margin at Chappell Park in Atlanta.

Freshman Josh Zuckerman, sophomore Connor Skertich and senior Mike Golob combined for the shutout as the Eagles improved to 27-11 overall and finish the UAA season at 13-2, setting a conference record for most wins inside league play in UAA history.

Zuckerman spun a career-best six innings, limiting the Bears to six singles and a walk as he earned his third win of his rookie campaign. Skertich retired six of the eight batters he faced in two scoreless innings before Golob closed the door in the ninth, striking out two as he worked around two baserunners.

It is the third shutout of the year for the Eagles and the second in UAA action after previously blanking Case Western Reserve on March 30th. On the other side of the diamond, it is the first time this season WashU has been held scoreless in a game and the first time they did not score a run in a game since March 10, 2020, a streak spanning 113 ballgames.

The Eagles took advantage of three WashU errors on Sunday as six of the eight runs scored were unearned. Emory opened the scoring in the second, scoring four runs with two outs after a throwing error by the WashU second basemen extended the inning.

Sophomore Josh Katz added a run in the sixth with his RBI single, scoring junior Tyler McLoughlin. Two innings later, McLoughlin came around to score again after hitting a solo home run to lead off the eighth. The home run was McLoughlin's 10th of the year, joining sophomore Jack Halloran with a double-digit total as Halloran reached 10 home runs on Saturday. McLoughlin and Halloran are the first Emory teammates to reach 10 or more home runs in a single season since 1999 and are only the fifth and sixth players to ever accomplish the feat in program history.

Sophomore Brok Liu added a run-scoring single in the frame before Katz came home three batters later as freshman Andrew Shlomm reached first on another WashU defensive miscue.

The Eagles will conclude the regular season on Tuesday when they host No. 13 LaGrange College at 3:00 pm in the finale.
