2023 Baseball Season Recap

2023 Baseball Season Recap

Highlighted by one of the best statistical offenses in team history, the Emory University baseball program was a force to be reckoned with during the 2023 season.

The Eagles established new program season records in slugging percentage (.530) and on-base percentage (.439) while posting second-best totals in home runs (48), batting average (.342) and finished seventh all-time with 361 runs scored.

Emory put up the most wins in a season since the 2016 campaign, going 28-11 overall, and set a University Athletic Association record with 13 wins, going 13-2 in conference play to comfortably win the team's second straight conference championship.

A mid-season lull saw the Eagles slip to 10-8 following a 9-3 start but were able to right the ship and end the season on a torrid pace as one of the hottest teams in the country – winning 18 of their final 21 games. Despite the terrific finish to the year, the Eagles were held out of the NCAA tournament field as the team was denied an at-large bid.

Over the final 21 games, the Eagles averaged 11.4 runs per game and scored 10 runs or more on 12 different occasions.

None were more impressive than a Saturday afternoon in April when the Eagles made both local and national headlines with their doubleheader sweep of conference foe Brandeis University. Emory scored 31 runs in both games of the doubleheader sweep, setting both conference and program records for runs scored, UAA records for hits and RBI, and team records for RBI, home runs and total bases. Of all the impressive numbers put forth on that day in Waltham, Mass., none were as historic as sophomore Jack Halloran.

Halloran went 9-for-10 with four home runs and 15 RBI across the two games and finished the series 13-for-18 with 15 runs, five home runs and 19 RBI as he became the first player in team history, hitter or pitcher, to be named a National Player of the Week by the NCBWA. In the first game of the doubleheader, he became the second Eagle to ever swat three home runs in a single game, joining Ellis Schwartz who first accomplished the feat six weeks earlier in a win over Oglethorpe.

Halloran was a key piece to the unreal pace the team closed the season on as he had an unstoppable end to his own personal campaign as well collecting 27 hits with eight home runs, while scoring 24 times and driving in 34 runs over his final 13 games. With that effort, Halloran led the charge as the Eagles cleaned up numerous postseason accolades.

He was one of four Eagles to earn All-Region acclaim by the ABCA and one of six players to be named to the All-Region squad by d3baseball.com.

Junior Tyler McLoughlin headlined all award winners as he became the third player in program history be selected as an All-American by both d3baseball.com and the ABCA. McLoughlin powered the offense with a team-leading 12 home runs, the second most in a single season in team history, while hitting .352 and driving in 41 runs. McLoughlin was also one of the several pitching standouts for the Eagles as he strengthened the backend of the bullpen with a 1.80 ERA while going 3-0 with six saves in 13 appearances. He struck out 28 in 20 innings.

McLoughlin took over closing duties for Aaron Mishoulam who transitioned into a frontline starter in 2023 and blossomed in the role. Mishoulam was named to the All-Region First Team by d3baseball.com after being honored by the UAA as the Pitcher of the Year. He went 7-0 over his final nine starts, finishing 7-2 with 63 strikeouts and a 3.28 ERA in 11 starts.

Along with McLoughlin and Mishoulam, Schwartz was honored as a First Team All-Region selection after an all-around outstanding senior season. He was the lone player to start all 39 games while hitting .377 and posted team-highs in hits, runs, triples and total bases.

To go along with the All-America and All-Region acclaim, eight different Eagles were named to the All-UAA team with Zach Wasserlauf joining Mishoulam as a major award winner with Rookie of the Year honors. Head Coach Mike Twardoski and his staff of Bobby Perez and Sam Carpenter were also recognized, winning Coaching Staff of the Year honors for the second straight season.

Senior Henry Pelinski rounded out the major award winners as he became the first Eagle since 2017 to be tabbed to the Academic All-America Team. Pelinski flourished as a senior with career-highs in batting average and on-base percentage while collecting 10 extra base hits, scoring 35 runs and driving in 33 runs.
