Men's Basketball Win Streak Snapped by WashU

Men's Basketball Win Streak Snapped by WashU

The No. 16 ranked Emory University men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped Sunday afternoon, falling to WashU 72-69 in a marquee UAA matchup in Atlanta.

With the win, the Bears pull even in the conference race and now are tied for first with the Eagles at 5-2. Both teams now stand at 14-4 overall following the hard fought contest.

Senior Mason Johnson led Emory scorers for the second straight game, posting 24 points on 9-for-13 shooting. Freshman Benjamin Pearce had 20 points to go along with five assists while sophomore Cale Martens recorded his fifth double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Eagles opened with an 8-3 lead through the games' first five minutes with Johnson contributing with six of the eight points. Emory maintained the lead until WashU took its first lead of the game at 10:08 with a three-pointer from Charlie Jacob to go up 13-12. Jacob's bucket sparked a 10-0 run for the Bears that helped them control the rest of the half and go into the break in front by five at 34-29.

The Eagles came out of the break to score the first four points and cut it to a one-point gap, 34-33 but a jumper from WashU's Jake Wolf followed by a foul on a three-point attempt pushed the Bears edge back to 39-33 with 16:49 on the clock. Emory proceeded to score the next six points, tying things up on with a Pearce jump shot at 15:40.

A 10-0 run later in the half gave the Eagles a 60-54 lead and extended the edge to seven before five straight points from the Bears cut it to 63-61 with 4:39 showing on the clock.

The Eagles maintained the lead until the 1:30 mark when Will Grudzinski sank a three-pointer for WashU to even the score at 67. Sophomore Albert Fallas put Emory back in front with a made jumper with 58 seconds to go but once again Grudzinski converted a three, giving the Bears a one-point advantage with 32 seconds to go.

Emory had one final chance for the win as Pearce got a shot off with four seconds to go but his shot attempt was blocked. The Bears controlled the rebound and would sink two free throws down at the other end to seal the win.

The Eagles will look to rebound next weekend as the team travels to Chicago and St. Louis for rematches with UChicago and WashU.
