Men's Basketball Uses Second Half Comeback to Defeat UChicago, 77-70

The No. 20 ranked Emory University men's basketball team used a strong second half to comeback and defeat the University of Chicago, 77-70, Friday night at the Ratner Athletics Center in Chicago, Illinois.

The Eagles erased a nine-point second half deficit, outscoring the Maroons 38-26 across the final twenty minutes to maintain their spot atop the UAA standings at 6-2 and now sit 15-4 overall. Four Eagles finished in double figures, led by freshman Jair Knight's game-high 21 points, as Emory remained unbeaten on the road, moving to 7-0 in games played away from the WoodPEC this season.

Sophomore Cale Martens tied a season-high with 17 points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds while freshman Benjamin Pearce posted 16 points with six rebounds and six assists. Sophomore Albert Fallas, along with Martens, knocked down three three-pointers in the win, scoring 10 points. The Eagles as a unit shot 43.6% percent from the field and were 10-for-27 from long range.

Emory opened the game on a 10-4 run and eventually held a 22-16 lead at the 11:03 mark of the first half. The lead stayed at six at 26-20 but a solid finish held the Maroons take the lead, going into halftime in front 44-39.

UChicago saw its lead grow to nine at 50-41 at 15:46 prior to the Eagles mounting their comeback. A 16-7 run over the next five minutes of game action helped Emory get back into the game, tying the score at 57-57 with a Logan Shanahan three with 10:59 remaining before regaining the lead at 59-58 with a Knight jumper at 9:51.

Knight put the Eagles ahead for good with a drained three-pointer at 7:42, snapping a 60-60 tie. UC drew within one again at 66-65 but a Martens three at 4:16 followed by another three by Fallas at 2:29 helped ice the win.

Next up for the Eagles is another key matchup against WashU, set for Sunday afternoon in St. Louis. Both teams are tied for first in the UAA following the Bears' win over Rochester Friday night with six games left to play.
