Men’s Basketball Opens 2023 UAA Challenge with 87-57 Victory against Colby

The No. 16 Emory University men's basketball team picked up their fourth consecutive win on Friday afternoon in the first game of the 2023 UAA Challenge against Colby in Waltham, Massachusetts.

The Eagles saw four players with double digit points including junior Logan Shanahan who posted his second double-double of the season registering 14 points and 10 rebounds for Emory. Junior Cale Martens had another impressive day for the Eagles posting 19 points and went 2-3 from beyond the arc.

Emory's victory marks the fifth win this season and the Eagles improve to 5-1. The Mules were led by Marcos Montiel's 15 points and now sit 4-2 on the season.

The Eagles shot 46.4% from the field and went 11-for-16 from beyond the perimeter. The team held Colby to 31.0% shooting as well at 48.0% from three. The defense was on fire from the Eagles holding the Mules to just seven assists on the night compared to their 16 after posting a program record 31 assists against Sewanee.

Starting the first half strong, the Eagles took an early 10-3 lead highlighted by four free throws from sophomore Ben Pearce with 17:43 remaining in the half. Emory was able to later take a 21-10 lead with 13:17 left in the first half highlighted by back to back jumpers from freshman AJ Harris forcing the first timeout from the Colby bench.

Later in the half, the Mules were able to make it a nine-point game after back to back threes from the Colby bench brought the score to 25-16. The Mules came closer with the Eagles holding a slight 27-24 lead with 6:15 remaining in the half. Emory went on a 16-6 run in the final six minutes of the half to head into the locker room with a 46-30 lead at the half.

The Eagles ran with the second half of the game taking a 20-point lead on a three from sophomore Tyson Thomas with 14:04 remaining. The scoring continued for Emory on another three from Martens with 10:05 left to take a 68-44 lead in the game.

Emory finally hit the 80-point mark on another three from sophomore John Coppolino IV with 4:33 remaining in the game before finishing out the night with an 87-57 victory.

The Eagles will finish out the 2023 UAA Challenge on Saturday, December 2 at 1 PM against Bates in Waltham, Massachusetts.
