WashU Edges Emory Men's Soccer, 2-1, in UAA Opener

The Emory University men's soccer team opened the University Athletic Association portion of the schedule Saturday afternoon, coming up on the other side of a 2-1 decision to WashU at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta. The Bears improve to 4-3 following the conference opener while the Eagles fall to 2-4-4.

Neither side could get much going in the opening 45 minutes with half coming to an end in a scoreless stalemate. Senior Alejandro Gomez had the Eagles first real threat in 21st minute, drilling the woodwork on an attempt from inside the 18.

Senior Peter Wagner had the save of the day in the 28th minute to keep the game tied at zero, making a leaping save on a John Daniels shot attempt. Senior Joe Beare had another opportunity for Emory before the halftime break, but his shot sailed over the crossbar on a 1-on-1 chance from close.

After being limited on the offensive end in the first half, WashU ended the drought as the Bears broke the scoreless game. Following a frenzy right outside the goal where two shots drilled the post and another was blocked, WashU's Armando Sanchez-Conde finally finished to the near post.

The score remained until 1-0 until the 76th minute when the Bears took advantage on the counter to make it 2-0. Senior Madison Conduah saw a header go off the post with WashU controlling the rebound and went down the field where Carl Vestberg slid a shot past Wagner off the feed from Ryan An.

Emory nearly got on the board with ten minutes remaining with a flurry of action of their own inside the six. Beare saw a shot blocked before sophomore Ryan Hayes had two shots blocked including one saved on the goal line by a Bear defender.

The Eagles cut the deficit in half when Beare rifled a shot home after beating a pair of defenders in the 87th minute. That would be as close as Emory would come as Beare had one last opportunity for the Eagles in the final minutes but his shot at the 87:42 mark went high.

Emory looks to rebound Tuesday night when they welcome crosstown rival Oglethorpe University to campus for a mid-week matchup. Kickoff is scheduled to get underway following the women's matchup with the Stormy Petrels at 7:30 PM.
