2022 Men's Soccer Season Recap

2022 Men's Soccer Season Recap

The 2022 edition of the Emory University men's soccer team saw three Eagles honored on the All-UAA team and saw the team score notable wins over Illinois Wesleyan, Oglethorpe, Brandeis and Roanoke.

The season began with the annual Sonny Carter Invitational with newcomer Sebastian Rincon providing the dramatics with a game-tying goal with six seconds to draw Covenant. The last-second goal capped off an impressive second half comeback that led the Eagles riding the momentum into the following afternoon as three different players scored in the shutout win over Illinois Wesleyan as Emory concluded the annual season opening tournament with  a 1-0-1 mark. Fifth-year senior Will Tichy was honored with Invitational MVP honors and was one of four on the All-Tournament Team along with Luke Price, Owen Hallauer and Alejandro Gomez.

A 0-3-3 stretch was then snapped with two out of three wins at home as the calendar flipped to October. Among the wins was a decisive 3-0 win over local rival OU with Tichy, Josh Grand and Zach Kornblum providing the scores.

The Eagles rounded out the back half of the year with a 2-2-1 record over the final five games, including another impressive second half comeback against Brandeis. Emory once again scored three goals over the final 45 minutes to earn its first conference win. In the season finale, the Eagles honored their 12 seniors with another climatic contest with Gomez scoring the equalizer vs. Rochester under three minutes to play to draw the Yellowjackets.

Despite the under .500 overall record, the Eagles were tough to handle at home as they posted a 5-2-2 record at the WoodPEC.

Gomez led the offensive attack all season long for the Eagles as he paced the team in goals, assists and points across 18 games. His 16 points (6G, 4A) helped land him a berth on the All-Conference First Team. Joining him was Grand and Cole Hendricks on the Second Team.

Twelve different Eagles scored over the course of the season with Gomez, Grand and Kornblum leading the way with 14 of the team's 29 goals. Alex Mills and Trey Reilly added the charge with three assists each.
