2014-15 Emory Men's Tennis Recap

The 2014-15 edition of the Emory men's tennis team maintained its reputation as one of the premier programs in Division III.  Fueled  by a lineup that included three senior performers, the Eagles finished the campaign with an overall record of 18-7 and ranked No. 5 nationally.

The Eagles were sent on the road to Lexington, Va., where they defeated Juniata College, 5-0, and No. 23 North Carolina Wesleyan, 5-1, in NCAA Tournament second- and third-round matches, sending them to the quarterfinal round of the Championships for the 24th straight season.  Emory saw its season come to an end when it came out on the short end of a 5-3 verdict to Washington University.

After the team portion of the Championships wrapped up, Emory had two players, seniors Eric Halpern and Alex Ruderman, compete in the singles competition.  Ruderman opened with a first-round victory against Noah Sprinkel of Coe College before losing to No. 1 seed Warren Wood of Claremont-Mudd Scripps in the Round of 16.  Halpern fell to Chris Krimbill of Case Western in his opening match  Ruderman and classmate Ian Wagner competed in the doubles portion of the event, coming out on the short end of their match to Joe Dorn and Wood of CMS.

Emory captured its first University Athletic Association title since 2012, defeating Washington University, battling to an intense 5-4 decision over the Bears that saw the match come down to No. 3 singles, with junior Rafe Mosetick rally for a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 win over Tyler Kratky that saw him stave off seven match points en route to forcing a tiebreaker in the final set.

Both Ruderman and Wagner captured All-America honors following their performance at the ITA South Region Championships.  Ruderman played his way to the singles title, defeating Halpern in the championship match, while joining up with Wagner for a first-place performance in doubles, upending the North Carolina Wesleyan duo of Robert Kjellberg and Sebastian Sikh, 8-3, in the championship showdown.

Ruderman, Halpern and Mosetick garnered singles national rankings with Ruderman holding down the No. 13 position nationally (No. 3 in the Atlantic South Region), Halpern No. 35 nationally (No. 8 Atlantic South Region) and Mosetick tabbed No. 36 nationally and No. 9 in the region.

The 2014-15 campaign closed out the careers of Ruderman, Halpern and Wagner with the trio ranking prominently in a number of school categories.  Wagner's 88 singles wins ranked sixth all-time on the Emory all-time chart while his 86 triumphs in doubles were fourth. Ruderman posted 91 singles victories, the ninth-highest total in program history, while Halpern notched 75 wins in singles, good for a 15th-place tie on the Eagles' career list.
