The Emory University men's tennis team closed out its week in Florida on a high note Sunday morning, blanking the University of Chicago in the third-place match of the University Athletic Association.
Going up against the No. 9 ranked Maroons, the Eagles controlled all facets of the match on their way to their 16th win of the season. Emory now stands at 16-5 overall while UChicago drops to 15-5.
The 5-0 victory began with a sweep in doubles action. Juniors Samuel Dean and Nolan Shah opened with an 8-3 decision on the third spot which was then followed by an 8-5 result on court one from graduate student Charlie James and junior Ryan Glanville. Senior Andrew Esses and freshman John Lasanajak rounded out the 3-0 start with an 8-7 win at the second position.
James added to the Eagles' total as he was the first to finish in singles, posting a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at the No. 4 spot. Freshman Dean Kamenev then came through with the clinching point on three 7-5, 7-6.
At the conclusion of the match, the Eagles held set leads on court one by Esses (6-3, 4-4) and on court six from junior Brandon Cohen (6-4, 4-4).
Emory now awaits to hear its NCAA tournament draw when the field is announced in early May.
