Emory Cross Country Returns to Action with Two Meets on Saturday

Emory Cross Country Returns to Action with Two Meets on Saturday

The Emory men’s and women’s cross country teams will split into two factions this Saturday, Oct. 2 as each team will send a group of runners to the Louisville Sports Commission Cross Country Classic in Louisville, Kentucky as well as to the Alexander Asics Invitational in Fairburn, Georgia.

The Louisville Sports Commission Cross Country Classic is one of the biggest collegiate cross country meets each year and this year will play host to 132 men’s teams in the 8k race and 137 women’s teams in the 5k race. The race will take place on the trail at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park which is the same course that the NCAA DIII Championships will be on November, 20th. According to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll released earlier this week, some of the best men’s and women’s teams in the country will be in attendance, with eight men’s teams and seven women’s teams inside the top-25 in attendance including No. 5 MIT for the men and No. 1 Johns Hopkins for the women.

The event will be split into three tiers - Gold, Blue and Silver - which are meant to organize teams into heats based on the program's collegiate division and competition level, and each tier will have a men's and a women's race. The Eagles are scheduled to run in the Silver men’s race at 12 p.m. and the Silver women’s race at 12:45 p.m.

On the same day the Eagles will send a different faction of their men’s and women’s teams to the Alexander Asics Classic in Fairburn, Georgia. Starting at 8 a.m. the men’s team will be competing against 28 teams in the 8k, while an hour later at 9 a.m. the girl’s team will be competing against 30 teams in the 5k. Emory last competed at the Converse Kickoff in Spartanburg, South Carolina where the 16th-ranked men finished first out of 26 teams and the 21st-ranked women finished second out of 23 teams.
