Emory Softball Closes Out UAA Championships With Win Over Case -- Finishes 8-0 At Conference Tourney

The No. 2-ranked Emory softball team closed out a perfect run at the University Athletic Association Championships on Saturday with a victory over Case Western Reserve University.  The Eagles raised their overall record to 32-1, 8-0 in league play, with a 4-0 triumph over the Spartans who slipped to 7-8 overall while closing out the conference portion of their schedule at 3-5.

Freshman pitcher Sydney Carpenter turned in a masterful effort in the circle en route to upping her record to 5-0 on the year, holding the Spartans to just two hits while striking out five.  Carpenter played a key role in Emory's drive to the championship, going 2-0 and earning two saves.  She did not allow a run in 17 innings of action and fanned 23 opponents while walking eight.  Freshman Hannah Sendel collected three of Emory's four hits including a first-inning three-run homer, her fourth round tripper of the season.  Sendel enjoyed an excellent stretch at the UAAs, hitting .471 (8-for-17) and leading all players with four homers and 15 RBIs.  The Eagles' other run came in the top of the sixth when senior Meaghan Schultz delivered a two-out single that scored pinch runner Courntey Sugihara.

It is the second time in the past three years and the fourth time overall that Emory finished with a perfect record in the conference championship with this year's squad joining the 2002, 2003 and 2011 teams to accomplish that feat. Emory clinched at least a share of the UAA title on Friday and won it outright earlier today with a victory over Rochester.

Emory returns to action next Friday (Mar. 22) when it plays a doubleheader at Covenant College.
