Emory Softball Drops Season Opener to Maryville

Emory Softball Drops Season Opener to Maryville

The Emory University softball team dropped both games of the season-opening doubleheader to Maryville College Saturday afternoon in Atlanta, GA.

The Scots were victorious by a 14-0 count in game one and by a 5-2 margin in game two at Cooper Field on Emory's campus.

In the opener, the Eagles were forced to play catch up early, giving up four runs to the Scots in the opening frame. Maryville continue to push across runs, tallying another four spot in the second and six more in the third. In the first at-bat of the season for the Eagles, sophomore Page Nellis smashed a double down the right field line marking the first hit of the season for Emory. In the bottom of the fifth inning, senior Mattie Ryan hit a double deep into right field as part of the team's four hits in the opener.

In the second game of the afternoon, the Eagles plated two runs on seven hits but fell by three runs. After spinning five innings in game one, sophomore Natalie Swift began work in the circle in the second contest, lasting two innings and gave up one run on two hits. On offense, sophomore Abby Sekoff was a perfect 3-for-3 and crossed the plate once. Sophomore Rachel Cocolis had a strong game herself, going 2-for-4 at the dish and had one of the Eagles two RBI.

Trailing by five entering the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles mounted a comeback in their last at-bat, scoring the first two runs of the year and brought the tying run to the plate. However, Maryville thwarted the Eagles comeback attempt by striking out Tyler Miller to end the contest.

Emory returns to action Thursday night, taking on crosstown foe Agnes Scott College in the first of a two-game home-and-home series with the Scotties. First pitch on Thursday is slated for 6:00 PM at ASC.
