Softball Splits Mid-Week Doubleheader with St. Olaf

In the final non-conference games of the regular season, the Emory University softball team split a mid-week doubleheader with visiting St. Olaf College Wednesday afternoon at Cooper Field in Atlanta.

In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, the Eagles earned the run-rule victory in the first contest of the day as they defeated the Oles 9-1 in five innings before St. Olaf won the nightcap by a 5-2 count.

Emory, now standing 13-9 overall, returns to UAA competition this weekend as they travel to Brandeis University for a four-game series starting Friday afternoon in Waltham, MA.

Game 1 – Emory 9, St. Olaf 1 (5 innings)

Senior Mattie Ryan improved to 11-2 in the circle as she spun five innings on one-run ball to go along with four strikeouts. She added two hits, two walks and one RBI at the dish.

After missing the weekend series with Carnegie Mellon, sophomore Page Nellis returned to the lineup as she delivered a team-high three RBI as she was one of five Eagles with at least one RBI in the win.

Senior Megan Weisenberg picked up two doubles including a two-run, two-bagger to make it a 6-1 ball game in the fifth.

The Eagles notched runs in all but one inning, putting five on the board in the fifth to clinch the eight-run win.

Game 2 – St. Olaf 5, Emory 2

The Oles set the tone for the second game of the afternoon, pushing three across in the opening inning. However, the Eagles responded in the home half of the inning with two runs as Ryan smacked her fourth home run of the season as she deposited a two-run shot deep over the left field fence.

The score remained 3-2 until the sixth inning when St. Olaf was able to bring two more runners home to provide the final margin.

Sophomore Natalie Swift tossed a complete game in the defeat, striking out two over her seven innings. The Oles' Jaelyn Orth kept the Eagle bats quiet in the latter stages of the game, tossing four scoreless innings of relief, giving up just one walk and a hit to earn the win.
