WashU Takes Two from Emory Softball to Begin Series

The Emory University softball team dropped the series opening games to WashU Friday afternoon as the Bears swept the doubleheader in St. Louis, MO.

Emory slips under .500 with the two defeats, falling to 17-19 overall and 6-12 inside the UAA while WashU upped its overall record to 27-9 and 13-5 in the UAA.

The two teams will conclude the series Saturday afternoon with another twinbill beginning at 2:00 PM EST.

Game 1: WashU 6, Emory 2

The Eagles led off the game firing the opening salvo in the first as freshman Kayla Lang worked a bases loaded walk that forced home graduate student Allie Moberg.

The Bears were quick to answer though, scoring three times in the home half of the first off sophomore Natalie Swift thanks in part to a two-run home run by Maggie Baumstark.

WashU continued to build a lead with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to move out in front, 6-1.

The Eagles did not go quietly however, rallying in the seventh with two outs. Moberg singled and moved to third on a two-base error from the centerfield before scoring a batter later as senior Mattie Ryan delivered a single to left. Unfortunately, sophomore Page Nellis was unable to continue the momentum as she grounded out to short for the game's final out.

Moberg and Ryan combined for six of the team's eight hits as both Eagles registered three-hit performances.

Game 2: WashU 8, Emory 0 (5 innings)

The Bears' Jamie Burgasser was solid in the circle as she silenced the Emory bats in the second game of the day, limiting the Eagles to just three base runners across the five frames.

Nellis and senior Megan Weisenberg accounted for the Emory hits as Weisenberg had a leadoff single in the first before Nellis picked up a one-out single in the fourth. The third Emory baserunner came in the second as junior Tyler Miller began the inning with a leadoff walk.

Ryan took the loss in the circle, striking out three in her 4.2 innings of work.
