Softball Drops Doubleheader to Pacific Lutheran to Close Opening Weekend

The Emory University softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against the Pacific Lutheran Lutes on Sunday afternoon at Cooper Field.

The Eagles fell in the first game, losing by a score of 11-0 in five innings and followed that up with an 8-4 loss despite a late-game comeback attempt in the second game against the Lutes as the Eagles moved to 2-2 after their first weekend of play this season.

Emory returns to the field on Thursday as they travel across town for a matchup with the Agnes Scott Scotties at 5:00 PM.

Game 1 - Pacific Lutheran 11, Emory 0

In the first game of the day the Lutes offense was on a roll as they poured in seven extra base hits including one home run blast over the left center field fence. Junior Natalie Swift went 1-for-1 in her lone plate appearance and also pitched a complete game. Sophomore Kayla Lang had the Eagles lone other hit as she looped a ball into center field to reach base in the fourth inning.

The Lutes started putting runs on the board early as they scored three apiece in both the first and second innings. Pacific Lutheran closed out the game with a grand slam in the fifth inning that saw the Lutes take an 11-0 run ending the game in five innings.

Game 2 - Pacific Lutheran 8, Emory 4

Despite having the bases loaded on two separate occasions in the sixth and seventh innings, the Eagles were unable to overcome the offensive barrage from the lutes in the third inning. Senior Tyler Miller showed out in the second game going 2-for-3 at the plate including a double in the first inning which scored the Eagles first run of the day. Lang had one of the best hitting days of her young career as she generated three hits in four at-bats and crossed the plate one time. Sophomore Page Nellis netted her first RBI of the season on a single to right center field in the sixth inning.

With the score knotted up at a run apiece heading into the third inning, the Lutes busted the game wide open as they scored five runs in the third with each of the runs coming off the bat of a different batter. Two more runs for Pacific Lutheran leading up the sixth inning saw the Lutes up 8-1 with the game seemingly in hand but the Eagles had some fight left in them still. Emory put three runs up on the board early in the sixth inning and later in the inning had the bases loaded but stranded all three of them as they were unable to bring them home. The seventh inning saw the Eagles load the bases again this time with just one out on the board. Two consecutive strikeouts would end the Eagles day as they fell 8-4 in the final game of their opening weekend.
