Softball Sweeps Weekend Series Against Covenant

Softball Sweeps Weekend Series Against Covenant

The Emory University softball team turned in a 2-0 day in its doubleheader against the Covenant Scots on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field.

The Eagles (8-2) took the first game of the day in five innings by a score of 8-0 and followed that up with a 7-3 win in seven innings over the Scots as Emory has now won six straight contests this season.

The Eagles are back in action this upcoming weekend with a doubleheader at home against the Huntingdon Hawks with the first pitch of game one set for 1:00 PM.

Game 1 - Emory 8, Covenant 0 (5 Innings)

The star of the game for the Eagles was freshman Mackenzie Duford (5-0) who pitched a complete shutout game and in doing so just gave up a single hit and a single walk while striking out nine of the 17 batters faced. Sophomore Kayla Lang had one of the best hitting days of her young career with a 3-of-4 hitting day which resulted in three RBI and a run scored. Senior Tyler Miller pitched in three RBI as well on a 2-for-2 hitting day which included a double.

Miller opened up the game with a two RBI double blast to center field that brought home freshman Ashley Chu and Lang and put the Eagles up 2-0 at the end of the first inning. Emory plated four more runs in the third before closing out the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Lang double that scored junior Natalie Swift

Game 2 - Emory 7, Covenant 3

Freshman Ella Hoyle showed out in the Eagles second game as she notched her third game of the season with three hits leading to an RBI and a run scored of her own. Chu had another successful day of getting on to base as she found herself on base twice, scored twice and registered her team-leading seventh steal of the season. Lang recorded her second and third doubles of the day in this one as she logged an RBI and a run scored for the Eagles. Freshman Isabel Cohen (1-1) picked up her first win in the circle of her collegiate career as she pitched for four innings giving up six hits and retiring four batters on strike outs.

The Eagles built up a big lead early in this one, as they found themselves with a four run lead after one inning with Hoyle bringing home the final two runs of the inning. Two more runs in the second inning, including an RBI double shot to center field from junior Leslie Berg, put Emory up six. Despite plating one more run in the fifth inning, the Eagles were unable to enforce the run rule allowing Covenant to make a mini-comeback attempt in the seventh inning as they registered three runs before the Eagles were able to close out the game.
