Softball Musters Late Inning Rally to Defeat Piedmont 10-6

Softball Musters Late Inning Rally to Defeat Piedmont 10-6

The Emory University softball team scored nine runs in the top of the fifth inning to secure a win over the No. 22 Piedmont Lions on Saturday afternoon in Demorest, Georgia.

The Eagles earn their 10th win of the season while freshman Mackenzie Duford improves to 7-2 in her rookie season.

Emory jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first due to an error from the Piedmont defense. The game was held scoreless until the bottom of the third with the Lions taking a 4-1 lead on three hits. Piedmont scored another run in the fourth taking a 5-1 lead into the fifth.

Senior Tyler Miller started the fifth inning scoring rally with a bases clearing double to center field. Freshman Ella Hoyle brought Miller home to tie the game with a single to center. The Eagles were able to capitalize on an error to take the lead.

Junior Page Nellis continued the rally with a single to right field to bring in the Eagles' seventh run. Emory scored three more runs in the inning, two of them resulting from errors.

Piedmont scored in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring the score to 10-6, but the combined pitching efforts of Duford and freshman Isabel Cohen were too much for the Lions' offense.

The Eagles return to Cooper Field on Wednesday, March 22 to face Berry at 3 pm.
