Softball Drops Game to St. Olaf, 8-7, in Extra Innings

The Emory University softball team lost to the St. Olaf Oles 8-7 in 13 innings on Wednesday afternoon at Cooper Field in their second straight extra inning game.

The Eagles drop to 12-10 on the year while the Oles pick up their sixth win of the season.

Freshman Isabel Cohen received the start for the Eagles and recorded her best outing this season holding St. Olaf scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning.

Freshman Ella Hoyle started the bottom of the fourth with a single up the middle, her second of the day. Junior Page Nellis was hit by a pitch followed by junior Natalie Swift loading the bases with a single to right field.

Junior Leslie Berg hit an infield single to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Cohen followed with a double to left field to take a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hoyle reached on a walk before Nellis drove her first home run of the season to right field to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead.

The Oles scored a run in the top of the sixth followed by four runs in the seventh to tie the game at five. St. Olaf took the lead in the top of the ninth inning on a single to score the sixth run.  

In the bottom of the ninth, Nellis started a two-out rally with a double down the right field line. Sophomore Kayla Lang followed with a double to center field to tie the game at six.

St. Olaf scored a run in the top of the 12th inning, but the Eagles were able to answer in the bottom half scoring on an error from the Oles' defense to tie the game at seven.

The Oles scored once again in the top of the 13th to take the game 8-7.

The Eagles continue UAA conference play this weekend against the Brandeis Judges with the first game set to begin on Friday, March 31 at 3 pm.
