Softball Defeated by NYU in Saturday Doubleheader

The Emory University softball team lost both games of its doubleheader against the NYU Violets on Saturday afternoon in New York.

The Eagles now sit at 14-15 on the season with the two losses while the Violets move to 17-10 on the year.

Game 1: NYU 8, Emory 7

The Violets jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning from a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. The game was held scoreless until the top of the third and the freshman Ella Hoyle was able to capitalize on an error from the NYU defense to cut the lead in half.

NYU scored once again in the bottom of the fourth also taking advantage of a mistake from the Eagles to give the Violets a 4-1 lead.

Senior Tyler Miller started the top of the fifth with a double to right field followed by a single and a stolen base from freshman Ashley Chu. With runners in scoring position, Hoyle drove a two-run double to right field bringing the game to 3-4.

Junior Natalie Swift was able to help her own cause bringing in another two runs for the Eagles on a single in the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead.

Hoyle continued her impressive outing in the first game bringing in another run on a single followed by a single from junior Page Nellis giving the Eagles a 7-4 lead going into the middle of the sixth.

The Violets dominated in the bottom of the sixth scoring four runs on three hits to take an 8-7 lead and win the game.

Game 2: NYU 4, Emory 2

The Eagles were able to score first in the top of the first inning on back to back errors from the Violets, but NYU answered with a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game.

Nellis drove a two-out double to center field in the third inning to score Hoyle, but the Violets tied the game again in the bottom half of the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, NYU scored two runs on a double to center field. Hoyle was able to score a run in the top of the seventh, but the effort fell short and the Violets took game two.

The Eagles and Violets face each other on Sunday, April 9 in the series conclusion at 10 am.
