Softball Falls to WashU in Saturday Doubleheader

The Emory University softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to the WashU Bears in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Eagles fall to 15-18 on the season and 5-9 in UAA action while the Bears improve to 16-15 on the year, 8-7 in conference.

Game 1: WashU 11, Emory 5

The Bears jumped to an early start in game one with a double in the top of the first to score the first run. Emory was able to answer back with a strong bottom half of the inning. With bases loaded, freshman Ella Hoyle was hit by a pitch to bring in fellow freshman Ashley Chu. Right after, junior Natalie Swift drew a walk to score another run for Emory.

With two outs in the first, freshman Isabel Cohen reached on a fielding error from the Bears plating two more runs and giving the Eagles a 4-1 lead in the first.

WashU scored six runs in the top of the second inning on two singles, a double and an error from the Eagles' defense. The Bears plated a run in the fourth before scoring two more in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Senior Tyler Miller started the bottom of the seventh inning with a double to right field and was brought in by a single from Hoyle to score the fifth run for the Eagles, but the effort fell short in game one.

Game 2: WashU 12, Emory 1

Once again, WashU was able to take a hot start in the first inning scoring three runs on three hits.

In the bottom of the second, Cohen brought in a run on a fielder's choice to the shortstop to cut the Bears' lead to 3-1.

WashU scored three more runs in the third inning before plating six in the fourth inning to take a 12-1 lead and take the game in five innings.

The Eagles and Bears will face off in the series finale on Sunday, April 16 at 11:30 am followed by the senior day celebration on the field.
