Softball Takes Series Opener from Carnegie Mellon, 7-3

The Emory University softball team won the first game against Carnegie Mellon on Thursday afternoon after possible weather pushed the series to start early.

The Eagles improve to 16-19 and take their sixth conference win while the Tartans fall to 14-21 on the season, 4-13 in UAA action.

Carnegie Mellon scored first in the bottom of the first inning on a single to center field. The Tartans singled again in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead

Freshman Ashley Chu reached base in her normal fashion with a bunt to the catcher. After a stolen base and an error, Chu reached third allowing junior Page Nellis to bring her in on a sacrifice fly.

The game was held scoreless until the top of the sixth when the Eagles' offense came alive. Nellis walked to start the inning before freshman Ella Hoyle hit her third home run of the season to tie the game at three.

Senior Tyler Miller singled followed by an error from the Tartans' defense to put runners at first and second. Freshman Mackenzie Duford moved the runners for sophomore Kayla Lang to bring in two runners on a single.

The Eagles scored six runs in the top of the sixth on five hits to take the first game 7-3.

Duford had one of her most impressive outings this season throwing yet another complete game with just two earned runs, a walk and six strikeouts.

Emory will face Carnegie Mellon in a doubleheader on Friday, April 21 beginning at 2:30 pm.
