Softball Splits Doubleheader with Carnegie Mellon, Looks to Sunday Finale

The Emory University softball team split its doubleheader with the Carnegie Mellon Tartans on a beautiful Friday afternoon.

The Eagles improve to 17-20 on the season and move to 7-11 in the UAA while the Tartans sit at 15-22, 5-13 in conference play.

Game 1: Carnegie Mellon 7, Emory 2

The Tartans started the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but junior Natalie Swift was able to get out of the inning.

Sophomore Kayla Lang continued her hot streak bringing in two runs in the top of the third on a single down the right field line.

The Tartans answered quickly in the bottom of the third adding four runs to take a 5-2 lead. Carnegie Mellon added two more in the bottom of the fourth and took the first game of the day 7-2.

Game 2: Emory 6, Carnegie Mellon 4

Junior Natalie Swift came alive in game two of the doubleheader going two-for-two with two RBI.

In the top of the first, freshman Ashley Chu reached on a walk and stole second before Swift singled through the left side to bring in the first run of game two.

Senior Tyler Miller singled to left field to start the top of the third. Chu was able to reach base again followed by a walk from freshman Ella Hoyle. With bases loaded, Swift drove in two more runs to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead in the third.

Carnegie Mellon brought in a single run in the bottom of the third but Emory responded with another run in the fourth on a single from freshman Mackenzie Duford. The Tartans scored another run in the bottom of the fourth but were held scoreless until the seventh thanks to a tremendous pitching effort from Duford.

Junior Page Nellis was able to plate a run in the top of the fifth inning to add yet another run for the Eagles followed by a huge double in the sixth inning from Miller to give Emory a 6-2 lead.

The Tartans looked for a comeback in the bottom of the seventh scoring two runs but Duford got out of the jam and the Eagles took game two 6-4.

The two teams will face each other again on Sunday, April 23 at 12pm for the series conclusion.
