Softball Splits Doubleheader with WashU on Saturday Afternoon

The Emory University softball team split its doubleheader with the WashU Bears on Saturday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Eagles sit 24-14 on the season, 10-8 in conference play, after dropping the first game, 3-4, and taking the second, 2-1. Senior Page Nellis, sophomore Ella Hoyle and freshman Ellie Zerr each hit a home run in game one scoring all of the Eagles' runs. The last time Emory hit three home runs in one game was last season against Agnes Scott.

Game 1: WashU 4, Emory 3

The first three innings were silent for both teams after the Eagles were able to load the bases in the top of the first starting with a leadoff double from sophomore Ashley Chu. The Bears were also able to get a baserunner in the first inning, but both pitchers were able to get out of a jam.

In the top of the fourth, Nellis knocked the first home run of the day to right field helping Emory take a 1-0 lead. The Bears responded in the bottom of the fourth with back to back doubles tying the game at one apiece. The fifth inning was scoreless again on both sides before Zerr and Hoyle drove back to back homers in the top of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead.

WashU opened the bottom of the sixth with two singles before a bases clearing double tied the game once again. A groundout was able to bring in the fourth run for the Bears giving them a 4-3 lead after six innings before they got three quick outs in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

Game 2: Emory 2, WashU 1

After two quick outs in the top of the first, the Eagles drove three singles to load the bases before junior Kayla Lang was hit by a pitch to give Emory their first run of the second game.

Freshman Lexi Bach got things started in the circle for the Eagles and gave up her only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning on a single down the left field line. She got her first strikeout of the game to end the inning.

The third inning was scoreless again on both sides before senior Natalie Swift knocked a two-out single in the top of the fourth. After stealing second and a single from Chu, Nellis drove a single to center field to score Swift and give Emory a 2-1 lead.

Bach was dominant for the rest of the game allowing just two more hits and holding the Bears scoreless to take the game 2-1.

The Eagles will finish Friday's suspended game tomorrow around 10:00 AM Eastern before playing the regularly scheduled game at 12:00 PM EST.
