2005-06 Athletes Of The Week

(Feb. 27) - Senior center Katie Bergfeld concluded her four-year Emory basketball career leading the team Saturday against Case Western Reserve University with eight points and six rebounds.  For the year she averaged 5.2 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game.  She was a major part of an eight-game turn around for the women's basketball team from last year.  They finished the season with a record of 15-10 and 5-9 in the University Athletic Association.  This marked the most wins in a season since the 1998-99 season when Emory finished 16-9.


(Feb. 20) - Freshman Lora Turner helped the Emory women's basketball team to a 1-1 record this past weekend. In a win over Carnegie Mellon University, Turner finished the contest with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while also grabbing five rebounds. On Sunday against Rochester, she finished the game with nine points, while also tallying five rebounds. For the season she is averaging 9.1 points per game and 5.7 rebounds per game, which is second on the team.


(Feb. 13) - Freshman forward Lora Turner averaged 10 points per game this past weekend for the women's basketball team.  Turner scored nine points on Friday against the University of Chicago, including 3-for-3 from the free throw line.  She also had five rebounds, four defensive and one offensive.  Sunday against No. 3 Washington University, she led the team with 11 points, while also grabbing four rebounds (three offensive and one defensive).  For the season she is averaging 9 ppg, while also grabbing 5.7 rpg, which ranks second on the team.


(Feb. 6) - Senior forward Lynn Oberschmidt led the Emory women's basketball team to two victories over ranked opponents this past weekend.  On Friday against No. 11 Brandeis, Oberschmidt finished with a near triple double.  She scored 10 points, while also grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out nine assists.  On Sunday against No. 12 NYU, she led the team in scoring with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting.  She also finished with six rebounds and three assists.  For the season she leads the team in scoring at 12.7 points per game.  She also leads the team in rebounding with 6.3.   


(Jan. 30) - Freshman Erica Kaplan led the Emory women's basketball team to a 75-72 upset win over No. 9 NYU over the weekend.  She recorded 21 points on 5-of-11 shooting.  She also hit three three pointers, while going 8-of-12 from the free throw line.  Kaplan collected five rebounds and dished out two assists in the win.  Against Brandeis she reached double figures with 10 points that included 2-of-3 from three point range.  For the season, Kaplan is averaging 7.8 points per game, as well as 3.4 rebounds per contest.  She is one of the team's leading three point shooters, hitting 40 percent of her attempts.


(Jan. 23) - Senior forward Lynn Oberschmidt stands one point away from joining the 1,000 point club at Emory.  Over the weekend she scored a season-high 24 points in Emory's 72-52 victory over Carnegie Mellon.  She was 10-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free throw line.  She also grabbed eight rebounds (five defensive, three offensive).  Against Rochester, Oberschmidt finished with eight points on 4-of-7 shooting, while also collecting six rebounds (four offensive, two defensive) and two blocked shots.  For the season she leads the team in points per game with 12.9 and rebounds per game with 6.3


(Jan. 16) - Mackenzie Bissett averaged 10.5 points per game during Emory's two University Athletic Association games over the weekend.  Against No. 3 Washington, Bissett scored nine points on 3-of-6 shooting from behind the arc.  On Sunday against No. 20 Chicago, she led the team in scoring with 13 points, as she connected on 3-of-5 from three point range.  For the season, Bissett is averaging 7.2 points per game and is hitting .393 from three-point range.


(Dec.12) - Freshman point guard Erica Kaplan turned in two double-digit scoring efforts this past week to help lead the Emory women's basketball team to their fifth and sixth victories of the season to stand 6-1 heading into the Christmas break.  Against previously undefeated University of the South, Kaplan scored 14 for the game, going 3 of 4 from behind the arc.  She also finished with two rebounds and two assists.  Saturday, against Tennessee Temple University she recorded a team-high 15 points to lead the Eagles to victory.


(Dec.5) - Junior point guard Beth Bergmann helped lead the Emory women's basketball team to a 2-0 record this past week with road victories over Piedmont College and LaGrange College.  Against Piedmont she turned in a team-high 21 points that included five three pointers.  She also had two rebounds and four assists.  During the game with LaGrange she once again scored in double figures with 10, while also recording three steals, two rebounds and two assists.


(Nov.28) - Junior point guard Beth Bergmann turned in two solid performances this past week for the Emory women's basketball team.  Against Oglethorpe University (Ga.) Bergmann finished with 14 points on four of nine shooting from the field and five of six from the free throw line.  She also had four rebounds and five steals.  Sunday's game against Spring Hill College (Ala.) saw her lead the team with 13 points while finished with two rebounds and two steals.  Last season she was selected as a second-team all-conference performer.
