Emory Women's Basketball Falls At No. 2 Chicago

Emory Women's Basketball Falls At No. 2 Chicago

The Emory women's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end Friday evening as it dropped a road game at the University of Chicago.  The No. 2-ranked Maroons upped their overall record to 17-0, 6-0 in the University Athletic Association, following a 68-49 verdict over the Eagles who slipped to 13-4, 4-2 in the UAA.

Junior Misha Jackson was the lone Emory player to finish in double figures in scoring with 15 points while her game-high 11 rebounds marked her second straight and fifth double-double of the season.  Sophomore Hannah Lilly totaled nine points while senior Melissa Koike added seven points. Lilly did sink a three-point field goal in the game, her 22nd straight effort of at least one trey.

Emory finished the evening shooting just 25.9 percent from the floor (15-of-58) compared to UC's mark of 35.4 percent (23-of-65), the third time in the last four games that the Eagles held their opponent to less than 36 percent  from the field.   Emory converted five-of-19 from three-point range while Chicago was successful on four-of-17.

Emory got out of the gate quickly against the Maroons, racing out to a 7-1 lead just three minutes and thirty seconds into the game.  UC countered with an 8-0 run, the last five points coming from Bryanne Halfhill, which pushed it ahead by a 9-7 count.  After a bucket by the Eagles' Misha Jackson tied things up, Chicago used a 13-2 scoring spree to take a 22-11 advantage with 10:33 left in the stanza.  After senior Melissa Koike knocked down a triple to draw Emory to within eight points, the Maroons extended their cushion to 13 points, 29-16 with 6:50 on the clock, following a 7-2 spurt.  A three-point play by Halfhill with 1:36 left would give the hosts its biggest lead of the half, 35-21, before a couple of buckets by Lilly cut the deficit to 12 points at halftime.  Emory connected on just 29 percent (9-of-31) from the floor during the opening 20 minutes of play, including 20 percent (2-of-10) from three-point range.  Chicago hit on 36.4 percent (12-of-33) from the field.  Jackson and Koike paced the Emory scoring attack with eight and seven points, respectively.

Chicago held Emory scoreless for the opening 5:39 of the second half and ballooned its lead to 44-25.  After a three-pointer by senior Emily Hyncik followed by a bucket by Jackson cut the gap to 14 points, a 13-2 Chicago scoring sprint pushed its lead to an insurmountable 25 points, 57-32, with 10:46 left in the contest.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 29) when it plays at No. 7 Washington University.
