Senior Shellie Kaniut led three double-figure scorers with 20 points, and the Emory women's basketball team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule on a successful note Monday afternoon with a victory at Rhodes College. The Eagles boosted their record to 9-2, following a 77-48 decision over the Lynx who fell to 1-11.
Kaniut wound up the day sinking five-of-11 field goal attempts, including a pair of treys, and eight foul shots in 10 tries in registering her eighth double-digit scoring performance of the campaign and second of 20 or more points. Sophomore Ashley Oldshue enjoyed a perfect shooting day in racking up 16 points, converting all four of her field goal attempts and going eight-for-eight at the stripe. It was her eighth consecutive double-figure scoring effort and 10th of the season. Freshman Allison Chernow chipped in a season-high 15 points, knocking down five-of-six from the floor, including both of her three-point tries, and three free throws. Chernow also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the year. Sophomore Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod finished with 10 caroms and eight points.
Emory held an 18-11 advantage with 2:26 left in the opening stanza before closing the quarter on a 7-0 spurt, started by a Chernow three pointer, to take a 14-point lead. The Eagles blew the game wide open in the second frame, rattling off a 15-4 blitz, which saw Kaniut score seven points, to race to a 40-15 lead with 3:06 left in the half. Emory would then take a 43-20 bulge into the intermission, hitting 60.9 percent (14 of 23) of its field goal attempts and 13 of 18 from the foul line.
Rhodes got to within 18 points with 1:14 left in the third quarter, but Emory stemmed the tide, thanks to six straight points by Kaniut that closed out the stanza with a 61-37 margin.
For the game, Emory shot 48.1 percent (25 of 52) from the floor compared to 24.6 percent (16 of 65) for Rhodes. The Eagles pounded out a 51-32 advantage in rebounding.
