2018-19 Emory Women's Basketball Recap

2018-19 Emory Women's Basketball Recap

The 2018-19 Emory women’s basketball team came through with a season full of highlights both a team and individual basis.

For the record, Emory finished with an overall ledger of 19-7, the fourth-highest win total in the 31-year history of the program.  The Eagles battled their way to a second-place tie in the University Athletic Association with a mark of 10-4, the fourth-highest victory total for league action in school history and the fourth occasion that an Emory squad had chalked up double figures in the victory column in conference outings.

The Eagles landed an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, the school's fourth berth to the postseason and first since the 2012-13 campaign. The Eagles were sent to Crestview Hills, Kentucky, and the campus of Thomas More where they battled No. 5-ranked Trine University in the opening round.

Some other key accomplishments that second-year Head Coach Misha Jackson saw her squad regster included:

** Leading the UAA in scoring defense with a mark of 56.3 points per game which ranked 76th among all D-III programs and that placed among the program's top-five seasonal marks in school history.

** Limiting 10 opponents to 55 or fewer points and seven to 50 or less.

** Pacing the UAA in field goal percentage defense (.354), holding nine of its last 11 and a total of 19 opponents to less than 40 percent.

** Holding down the No. 1 perch in the league in both scoring defense (58.2 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (.363) in UAA games.

** Connecting on 71.6 percent (293-of-409) of its free throw attempts, good for third place in the UAA and ranking fourth on the program's seasonal chart.

** Standing No. 2 in the UAA and 70th in the D-III ranks in rebound margin (+5.7).  The Eagles enjoyed an edge on the glass in 17 contests, finishing with a ledger of 16-1 in those affairs, and outboarded 12 foes by 10 or more.  In contests where Emory outrebounded the opposition, it showed a 41.8-30.0 per-game edge.

** Ranking first in the UAA and 72nd nationally with a scoring margin of +11.1.  Emory won 14 games by 10 or more points.

** Doling out an average of 16.3 assists per game, second among conference teams, 33rd nationally and  sixth on the school's seasonal ladder.

** Converting 43.0 percent (658-of-1529) of its field goal attempts, placing second in the UAA, 37th nationally and fourth on the Eagles' all-time season ladder.

** Ranking ninth in D-III in assist turnover ratio (1.19)

** With a focus on making the most of their offensive possessions, finishing second in the conference and 20th in D-III in fewest turnovers (358).

** Rattling off a seven-game UAA win streak (Jan. 20 – Feb. 10), tying the program’s longest single-season showing (2013 team) and tying the mark when the ’96-97 team won its last four conference encounters followed by the ’97-98 unit capturing its first three.  Included in the winning streak were home wins over No. 21 Washington University (Feb. 8) and No. 17 Chicago (Feb. 10).  The win over the Bears represented Wash U's lone setback in conference play during the year.

** Seeing Ashley Oldshue capture Honorable Mention All-America honors.  In addition, Oldshue became the 10th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points, with that event taking place vs. Agnes Scott on Dec. 11, 2018.

Senior Ashley Oldshue completed a four-year run in the program in grand fashion, earning Honorable Mention All-America honors as chosen by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. The 6-foot-2 Oldshue topped the club and ranked fourth in the UAA in scoring with an average of 16.7 points per game, the sixth-highest seasonal total in school history.  She finished first in the UAA and 27th in the D-III ranks with a 55.4 percent (173-of-312) from the floor, placing her fifth on the Eagles' seasonal list.  A double-figure scorer on 24 occasions, including eight of 20 or more points, Oldshue ranked as Emory's leading scorer in 18 contests.  In the rebounding department, she paced the club and was fourth in the league with an average of 8.2 boards per outing, ranking 15th on the school's seasonal chart.  The team leader on the glass on 15 occasions, she posted eight double-doubles (pts./rebs.) and totaled nine contests with 10 or more boards. Oldshue landed her third straight berth to the All-UAA First Team, becoming just the second player (Alicia Moore, '96-98) in program history to earn that distinction.  Career-wise, she finished among the school's all-time top 10 in 12 categories including blocked shots (1st, 122), points (1,302 pts., t-4th) and rebounds (661 rebs., 5th).

Junior guard Allison Chernow came through with a productive campaign that saw her earn a spot on the All-UAA Second Team. A starter in 22 of 26 contests, she ranked second on the squad and eighth on the conference ladder with a 12.8 points-per-game average. A double-figure scorer on 17 occasions, she led or shared for the team's scoring lead in five contests.  A dangerous long-range threat, she rang up a team-leading 49 three-point field goals (10th on the program's seasonal chart), and her average of 1.9 triples per game was seventh in the UAA. One of her outings saw her explode for 39 points, the program’s second-highest individual game total, and tied the school record by knocking down nine three-point field goals (11 attempts) in a double-overtime contest at Transylvania (Nov. 24). In addition to her scoring totals, Chernow placed second on the team with 87 assists and seventh in the UAA in assists average (3.3 apg).

Junior Erin Lindahl continued her ascension as one of the UAA's top performers, drawing Second Team All-UAA accolades after starting all 26 games and finishing third on the club and 12th on the league's score sheet with an 11.4 points-per-game scoring average. Lindahl registered 16 outings of double-figure scoring, leading or sharing for team scoring honors five times.  Second on the squad with 48 three-point field goals (11th on the program's seasonal list), her average of 1.8 treys per contest stood eighth in the UAA. She was successful on 38.7 percent (48-of-124) from three-point range, placing second in the conference and 12th on the Eagles' seasonal ladder.

Junior Lindsey Tse ran the Emory offense with precision from her point guard post, starting all 26 contests and doling out a conference-best 5.5 assists per game, good for 21st among all D-III players and third on the Eagles' seasonal ladder.  Tse dished out six or more assists on 14 occasions and her 144 total assists were second highest in the league, 19th nationally and tied for second on the school's seasonal chart. Just as important was the fact she topped the UAA and stood fifth among all D-III players in assist-turnover ratio (3.27).

In addition to Oldshue, other seniors wrapping up their careers were Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod and Courtney Henrich. Jackson-Sherrod was a mainstay in the lineup, appearing in 90 games during her Emory tenure, 50 as a starter. She averaged 7.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest and held down the No. 6 spot on the program's all-time list with 69 blocked shots and the No. 10 slot in field goal percentage (.469, 313-of-668).
