Emory Women's Basketball Drops Home Opener to #2 East Texas Baptist

In what was a hard fought game, the Emory University women's basketball team fell to No. 2 ranked East Texas Baptist University, 66-46, in the first game of the Emory Tip Off Classic Friday evening in Atlanta.

Senior Tori Huggins scored a season high for any member of the Eagles with 18 points including shooting 4-for-6 from behind the arc. Sophomore Izzy Munson and junior Claire Brock combined for 14 points off the bench thanks in large part to shooting a combined 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Junior Mariane Auza continued her stellar work on the defensive end contributing three blocks and a steal over the course of the night.

For the Tigers, Taylor Singleton and Mallory Stephens combined for 37 points and 13 rebounds. Stephens got to the line 11 times, knocking down nine of her free throw attempts. Off the bench, Jade Goynes and Haley Fieseler wreaked havoc on the defensive side against the Eagles, combining for four steals.

The Eagles couldn't keep the Tigers off the free throw line giving up 24 free throw attempts to just nine of their own. Emory did outshoot the Tigers from beyond the arc 31.8% to 27.8%. Another area of advantage for the Tigers was possessing the ball. They forced 22 Eagle turnovers to just 14 of their own.

After going down by ten halfway through the first quarter, the Eagles battled back to earn their first lead of the game midway through the second quarter, 19-18, on a jumper from Huggins. The Eagles wouldn't relinquish that lead the rest of the half, going into halftime with a 29-27 lead. A couple of free throws by Munson would give Emory a 35-32 lead in the third quarter but an over six minute long dry spell saw the Eagles go scoreless and fall behind the Tigers by eight going into the fourth quarter. Despite the Eagles best efforts they were never able to eat into their deficit eventually falling 66-46 thanks in large part to 11 made free throws in the fourth quarter by the Tigers.

The Eagles will look to right the ship as they close out the Emory Tip Off Classic on Sunday, November 21 at 1:00 PM against Ferrum College.
