The Emory University women's golf team saw its opportunity for a three-peat thwarted on Wednesday, falling in the University Athletic Association championship match to Carnegie Mellon University at The Raven Golf Course in Sandestin, Florida.
The Eagles dropped the finals by a 3-1-1 count to the Tartans in the match play format. Emory advance to its third straight UAA title match earlier in the day, defeating third-seeded WashU in a 19th hole tiebreak.
The one-day championship tournament began in the morning with the semifinals against the Bears. Emory and WashU were knotted at 2-2 following wins by freshman Derica Chiu (3&2) and junior Heejo Hyun (7&6) while freshmen Carys Code (1UP) and Esther Jung dropped their respective matches. The deciding match came down to junior Sharon Mun, who was able to top her WashU counterpart in a 19th hole tiebreaker after the golfers were even through 18 holes.
With the win, the Eagles moved onto the championship to face the top seeded Tartans. In the finals, Emory recorded its win from Mun, who posted a 6&5 decision. However, CMU claimed the titles with a 1Up win over Code, a 5&4 decision over Jung and a 3&2 victory over Chiu. Hyun saw her match end in a tie after 18 holes of action.
At the end of the competition, Hyun and Mun were both tabbed to the All-UAA Tournament Team.
The UAA Championships put an end to the fall for Eagles as they will return to the course in the spring with the Columbia Classic on February 10-12.
