Four Members of the Emory Swimming & Diving Team Earn UAA Weekly Honors

Emory University senior Liz Horvat, junior Patrick Augustyn, sophomore Kolin Smialek and freshman Sarah Greene all earned University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimmer & Diver Athlete of the Week honors, based on their performances during the Eagles’ dual meet against Clemson University.

Horvat  recorded an NCAA ‘A’ cut qualifying time in the 400-yard individual medley during the meet.  Competing in the final home meet of her career, the senior and 2009 NCAA Division III Swimmer of the Year swam a time of 4:27.36 in the event, finishing second overall in the 400 IM.  Earlier in the meet, Horvat swam a time of 10:18.61 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, the best mark by an Eagle this season and good for a second-place finish in the event.  Horvat rounded out the meet with a seventh-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.97.

Augustyn turned in three strong performances, including a first-place finish and a ‘B’ cut time. Despite facing NCAA Division I competition, Augustyn won the 200-yard butterfly with a ‘B’ cut time of 1:53.01.  He followed that performance with a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, touching in with a time of 51.37 seconds.  Augustyn also swam the butterfly leg of the Eagles’ 200-yard medley relay, which finished fifth with a time of 1:35.30.

Smialek recorded a pair of career-best scores in both dive events, including one NCAA qualifying score.  Smialek scored 285.00 points in the one-meter dive, good for a first-place finish and an NCAA qualifying score.  Earlier in the meet, the sophomore set a career-high in the three-meter dive, notching a score of 272.85.

Greene recorded an NCAA qualifying score in the three-meter dive during the meet.  Greene’s score of 277.73 in the event was the best score of her young career, and good for a fourth-place finish.  The freshman also notched a score of 245.40 in the one-meter dive, good for a fifth-place finish.

At the meet, the second-ranked Emory men suffered a 153-138 loss to Clemson, while the Emory women were defeated 162-132.  The Eagles will be off this weekend, before heading to the University of Rochester for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, from February 16th – 19th.
