The Emory University men's and women's swimming teams combined for 10 NCAA 'A' cut times and 39 'B' cut times during the first two sessions of the Miami University Invitational.

The meet opened on Thursday night with the men's and women's 1,650-yard freestyle.  Emory junior Joel Dobben scored 13 points for the men's team with a 16^th-place finish in the event, swimming a time of 16:30.55.  The Emory men finished the first day in seventh place.

Meanwhile, the Emory women placed four in the top-six finishers of the 1,650 free, headlined by senior Liz Horvat in second place with a time of 16:51.21 (the fourth-fastest time in school history), and junior Anne Culpepper in third with a mark of 17:05.25.  Both marks were good for NCAA 'A' cut times.  Also scoring and recording 'B' cut times for the Eagles in the event were senior Amy Minowitz in fifth place (17:20.22), and freshman Courtney McDermott in sixth place (17:20.97).  The Emory women ended the day in third place with 127 points, just four behind first-place Oakland University.

For the women during the first morning of competition, freshman Sadie Nennig broke the school record with a third-place finish in the preliminaries of the 100-yard backstroke, swimming an 'A' cut time of 56.03 seconds in the event, breaking former Eagles Tess Pasternak's record, set in 2009, by a hundredth of a second.  Sophomore Jacqueline Schneider also recorded an automatic qualifying time of 57.24 seconds with a fifth-place finish in the event, while junior Claire Pavlak finished 11^th with a 'B' cut time of 57.65 seconds.

Sophomore Leslie Hackler swam an 'A' cut time of 2:04.00 in the 200-yard butterfly, good for a sixth-place finish and the fifth-fastest mark in school history.  Recording 'B' cut times in the event were sophomore Samantha Neumann (12^th place, 2:07.57), freshman Adelaide Taylor (16^th place, 2:08.48), freshman Kylie McKenzie (17^th place, 2:08.49) and freshman Laura Manor (17^th place, 2:08:49).

Seven more Eagles recorded 'B' cut times in the preliminaries of the women's 200-yard freestyle, led by Culpepper, who finished fourth in a time of 1:51.89, and junior Whitley Taylor, who place eighth in a mark of 1:53.01.  Also recording provisional qualifying times in the event were senior Katie Mroz (10^th place, 1:53.43), sophomore Ann Wolber (15^th place, 1:53.97), junior Jennifer Aronoff (17^th place, 1:54.23), freshman Jennifer Pak (21^st place, 1:54.46) and freshman Suzanne Lemberg (23rd place, 1:54.51). 

Senior April Whitley led all Eagles in the preliminaries of the 100-yard breaststroke with an 'A' cut time of 1:03.47, the third-fastest time in school history and good for a third-place finish, while Mroz (10^th place, 1:05.17), sophomore Renee Rosenkranz (17^th place, 1:05.88), Aronoff (18^th place, 1:06.15) and McKenzie (19^th place, 1:06.28) all swam 'B' cut times in the event.

The Eagles notched eight more qualifying times during the preliminaries of the 400-yard individual medley, including automatic marks from Horvat in third place (4:24.11) and Manor in fifth (4:26.33).  Freshman Brooke Woodward (eighth place, 4:29.23), sophomore Theresa Gallagher (14^th place, 4:32.93), sophomore Taryn Lushinsky (17^th place, 4:33.98), McDermott (18^th place, 4:34.04), sophomore Mia Michalak (20^th place, 4:34.37) and McKenzie (22^nd place, 4:35.54) all had provisional qualifying efforts.

The women rounded off the morning session with four NCAA qualifying performances in the 50-yard freestyle preliminaries, including an 'A' cut and personal-best time of 23.28 from Pavlak, who finished second overall.  Wolber finished sixth in the event with a 'B' cut time of 23.77 seconds, while Lemberg (ninth, 24.03 seconds) and senior Morgan Klinzing (11^th, 24.05 seconds) also had provisional qualifying performances.

During the Friday morning session for the men, junior Patrick Augustyn paced the Eagles with an 'A' cut time of 1:48.95 and first-place finish in the preliminaries of the 200-yard butterfly, the sixth-fastest mark in school history, while senior Mackenzie Perry (third place, 1:50.90), senior Mark Bernstein (fourth place, 1:51.59), freshman Matt O'Brien (seventh-place, 1:52.56), and junior Ben Redpath (11^th place, 1:53.85) all recorded 'B' cut times in the event.

Bernstein also finished seventh in the preliminaries of the 200-yard freestyle with a 'B' cut time of 1:41.16, while sophomore Peter O'Brien finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a provisional qualifying time of 56.34 seconds (the sixth-fastest time in school history), and freshman Ross Spock claimed fifth in the preliminaries of the 100-yard backstroke with a 'B' cut time of 51.49 seconds.

The Emory men also had a strong showing in the preliminaries of the 400-yard individual medley, as Peter O'Brien placed first with a provisional time of 4:00.00, while Bryant Jones claimed seventh with a provisional time of 4:04.60 and Perry took 12^th with a 'B' cut time of 4:07.01.  The men wrapped up the morning session with provisional qualifying times from Spock (second, 20.71 seconds – the sixth-fastest mark in school history) and sophomore Richard Upton (third, 20.99 seconds) in the 50-yard freestyle.

The Miami Invitational will continue Friday evening at 6:00 PM, with qualifying swimmers competing in the finals of the morning's events, in addition to the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relays.  The meet will conclude on Saturday, with preliminaries at 9:00 AM and the finals at 6:00 PM.
