Eagles Fall to D-I Georgia Tech in Final Dual Meet

Despite registering 12 NCAA qualifying marks and six first-place finishes on Saturday afternoon, the Emory University swimming and diving teams fell short against Division I Georgia Tech, with the men losing 197-77 and the women dropping a 167-130 decision to the Yellow Jackets at the GT Aquatic Center in Atlanta, GA.

For the Emory women, junior Kylie McKenzie notched a pair of first-place finishes during the meet.  McKenzie topped all competitors in the 200-yard breaststroke with a provisional qualifying time of 2:23.98.  Earlier in the meet, she recorded a time of 1:07.12 in the 100-yard breaststroke, tying for first in the event.

Two other swimmers recorded both first-place finishes and 'B' cut times in individual events.  In the 200-yard backstroke, freshman Ellie Thompson finished first with a provisional time of 2:05.08, while senior Mia Michalak won the 200-yard individual medley with a mark of 2:08.33.

Adding 'B' cut times on the day for the Emory women were senior Leslie Hackler in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.11, third place) and the Eagles' 400-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Nancy Larson, senior Anna Dobben, junior Jennifer Pak, and senior Renee Rosenkranz (3:30.79, second place).  Dobben also finished tied for first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.09 seconds.

Capping off the day for the women were junior Sarah Greene and Annabel Enquist in the one-meter dive, with Greene registering a third place finish with a score of 264.38 and Enquist placing fourth with a score of 259.65, both surpassing the NCAA qualification scores.

Sophomore Hayden Baker turned in a pair of 'B' cut performances in the butterfly events for the Emory men, finishing third in both the 100-yard butterfly (50.36 seconds) and the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.74).  Senior co-captain Miller Douglas finished just ahead of Baker in the 200-yard butterfly, placing second with a 'B' cut time of 1:51.58.

Senior Peter O'Brien was the lone Eagle men's swimmer to record a first-place finish on the day, winning the 200-yard individual medley with a 'B' cut time of 1:53.69.  Senior Justin Beegle added a provisional qualifying time in the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:06.46, finishing third.  In addition, freshman Matt Wu finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:59.32, the best time in the event by an Eagle this season.

With the losses, the Emory men ended their season with a 1-6 record, while the women finished the year at 4-3.  Each of the Eagles' dual meets came against Division I, II or NAIA competition, including three against ACC or SEC teams.

The Yellow Jackets, who also wrapped up their dual meet season on Saturday, finished the year with a men's ledger of 2-4, while the women are 2-5.

The Eagles will now turn their attention towards championship season, beginning with the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in Chicago, Illinois from February 13th – 16th, where both the Emory men and women will aim for their 15th-consecutive conference titles.
