Wilson & Newsum-Schoenberg Receive UAA Swimmer of the Week Honors

Emory University junior Andrew Wilson and senior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg were selected as the University Athletic Association Swimmers of the Week, after each helped lead the Eagles to their 17th-consecutive conference titles at last week's UAA Championships.

Wilson was named the UAA Men's Swimmer of the Year, after setting records and finishing first in three events at the conference championship meet last weekend.  Wilson won and set new UAA records in the 200-yard individual medley (1:49.34), the 100-yard breaststroke (54.12 seconds) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:00.20).  In addition, he was a member of Emory's conference record-setting 400-yard medley relay team, which won the event in a time of 3:16.81.  Wilson also helped the Eagles' 800-yard freestyle relay team finish third (6:46.30), the 200-yard medley relay finish fourth (1:30.61) and the 400-yard freestyle relay win the 'B' heat with a time of 3:05.43.

Wilson accounted for 148.5 of the Eagles' 1,551 points during the meet, guiding the squad the UAA Championship.

Meanwhile, Newsum-Schoenberg was named the UAA Women's Swimmer of the Year, winning two events and setting a pair of records during the UAA Championships.  Newsum-Schoenberg won the 500-yard freestyle in a UAA-record time of 4:52.13, while adding an individual victory in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a mark of 16:54.47.  She also set a conference record in the 200-yard butterfly, swimming a time of 2:01.52 in the preliminaries, before claiming third-place in the finals.  She added ninth-place finishes as a part of the Eagles' 800-yard freestyle relay (7:32.89) and the 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:27.79).

Newsum-Schoenberg accounted for 110 of the team's 2,076.5 points, helping the squad to the UAA title.

This was Wilson's fifth UAA Athlete of the Week award this season, and the eighth of his career.  Newsum-Schoenberg garnered the honor for the second time this year, and the sixth time during her career.

Emory is slated to return to action this weekend, hosting the Emory Invitational on Friday, February 20th and Saturday, February 21st, the team's final meet before the NCAA Division III Championships.
