Swimming & Diving Sweeps Emmanuel in Return

The Emory University swimming & diving teams returned to action to open the spring semester on Saturday, hosting Emmanuel College in dual meet competition at the WoodPEC in Atlanta. The Eagles won 24 of the 26 events contested, including a clean sweep of all 13 races on the women's side.

For the Emory women, 11 different swimmers notched a first place effort in the 12 individual events with junior Sloane Donovan leading the way with a pair of wins. Donovan swept both distance events, posting times of 10:35.26 in the 1,000 Free and 5:12.65 in the 500 Free.

The Eagles' additional wins came from freshman Penny Celtnieks in the 100 Backstroke (57.65), senior Anna Glowniak in the 100 Breaststroke (1:06.53), senior Savannah Sowards in the 100 Fly (57.80), junior Penelope Helm in the 200 Free (1:55.87), freshman Claire DePiero in the 50 Free (24.70), graduate student Marianne Allard in the 200 IM (2:10.10), sophomore Sarah Daly in the 200 Fly (2:10.26), senior Sammie Kass in the 100 Free (53.93), freshman Jane Sanderson in the 200 Backstroke (2:06.64) and junior Fiona Arwood in the 200 Breaststroke (2:23.93).

Kass, Celtnieks, Sanderson and DePiero closed out the meet added to their win totals, teaming for the win in the 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:39.27.

In the men's portion of the meet, sophomore Jeff Echols was a two-time winner as the Eagles took first place in 11 of the 13 events. Echols swept both butterfly events, recording times of 49.42 in the 100 and 1:51.82 in the 200.

Seven Eagles combined for top finishes across the additional seven individual events with sophomore Alexander Pollack winning the 100 Back (51.66), sophomore Davis Shelton in the 1000 Free (10:11.15), senior Jeffrey de Groot in the 200 Free (1:43.17), senior Colin LaFave in the 50 Free (21.04), freshman Zachary Zhao in the 200 IM (1:53.79), freshman Will Kohn in the 200 Backstroke (1:51.57), sophomore Jason Amato in the 500 Free (4:47.75) and graduate student Justin Lum in the 200 Breast (2:04.09).

LaFave would add another win as part of the 200 Freestyle Relay, teaming with sophomore Dylan Yin, freshman Caden Bjornstad and sophomore Johnny Bradshaw to clock in at 1:24.14 in the final race of the afternoon.

The Eagles are back at the WoodPEC next Saturday, January 21st, as they host West Florida and Delta State at 10:00 AM. Prior to the start of the meet, the Eagles will honor its graduating class with a special on-deck ceremony.
