Volleyball Downs West Georgia in Four Sets

The Emory University volleyball team improved to 3-1 Tuesday night after collecting a four-set victory at Division II's University of West Georgia in Carrollton, GA.

The sophomore trio of Jessica Majka, Alana Dawson and Lily Martin paved the way as Majka and Dawson each contributed 15 kills in the winning effort while Martin added 10 terminations of her own. The Eagles finished with a .171 attack percentage (58-30—164) compared to UWG's .142 mark (41-19—155).

The Eagles were in control across the opening two sets as they took both by a 25-22 margin. The Wolves earned the first point of the match but that would be their only lead in the first set as Emory recorded the following four points and never trailed the rest of the way. The second set was more of the same as neither side led by more than two points until a Majka kill put the Eales ahead 23-20. UWG countered with back-to-back points until two consecutive errors gave Emory the set win.

With the score tied at 17 in the third, UWG rattled off five in a row to put the set out a reach, winning 25-22. The Wolves continued that momentum to lead things off in the fourth, going in front by as many as seven at 11-4.

West Georgia had a 12-6 advantage until the Eagles caught fire on the attack, putting together a run of 11 unanswered points on the backs of Majka, Dawson and freshman Elly Beshears to regain control at 17-12. The Wolves battled for a few points until a 5-1 spurt put Emory on the brink of the win at 24-16. UWG staved off defeat for four points before a kill from Martin sealed the victory.

The Eagles will return home as they gear up to host the East-West Classic this weekend. Emory will host seven teams across the two-day tournament while battling top-10 teams in No. 2 Trinity, No. 7 Johns Hopkins and No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the court.
