Volleyball Downs Greensboro and East Texas Baptist in Six Sets

The Emory University volleyball team finished the Jenny McDowell Invitational unbeaten after taking down both the Greensboro Pride and the East Texas Baptist Tigers on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Eagles start the season with a 3-0 record, the sixth time in the past 10 seasons and the first for new head coach Brianna Jones. The No. 13 ranked Emory's first match of the day against Greensboro was an impressive showing, winning 25-13, 25-16, 25-16 before going on to beat East Texas Baptist later in the evening in three sets with a line of 27-25, 25-11, 25-15.

Senior Carly Wallace continued to make a name for herself and proved to be a jack-of-all-trades notching 22 digs on the day, 10 in game one and 12 in game two, and 13 kills over the course of both matches. Junior Madison Cail came to play registering 15 kills during the day, the team-leading 10 of those coming in game two. The number puts her just five kills away from 300 in her career.  She also led the team with a .643 hitting percentage in game two (10-1-14). Junior Deborah Hong was also a standout posting 24 digs on the day, 12 in each match.

In the first game against Greensboro, the Eagles started strong opening with a 7-2 lead highlighted by four kills from Wallace. Emory was able to take that momentum into a 19-12 lead before going on a five-point run before taking the first set 25-13. The second set was played closer until the Eagles went on another five-point run in set two before playing another quick third set to take the first match of the day.

During the second match against ETBU, the Eagles took a 6-1 lead before going back and forth with the Tigers throughout the remainder of the match. ETBU tied the match at 24 before tying again, but the Eagles took the set thanks to another kill by Wallace followed by an attack error. Emory would not allow the Tigers to get close during the second match taking a 10-3 lead before the first timeout. The five-point run continued before taking the set 25-11. The energy was taken straight into the last set where the Eagles took the match with a 3-0 finish.

The Eagles are taking to the road next weekend to compete in the annual East-West Classic in Claremont, California where they will face Cal Lutheran on Friday before taking on Tufts and Colorado College on Saturday.
