Volleyball Opens UAA Play with Wins Against Chicago, Rochester

The Emory University volleyball team remains undefeated after picking up wins during the first day of the first UAA Round Robin against Chicago and Rochester on Saturday afternoon in Cleveland, Ohio.

The No. 9 ranked Eagles start the season 9-0 winning their first match of the day against Chicago 28-26, 28-26, 25-22 before going on to beat Rochester in four set with a line of 25-21, 25-19, 29-31, 25-21.

Senior Amanda Meyer notched a stellar day posting 18 kills on the day, seven in the first game followed by 11 against Rochester. Junior Alana Dawson also had an impressive start in UAA action notching 17 total kills on the day, 12 coming from game two. Junior Deborah Hong registered 28 kills on the day, 19 against Rochester. It proved to be another day of kills for the Eagles with junior Madison Cail posting 15 on the day.

The first game against Chicago was a thriller as both teams fought back and forth in the first two sets. In the first set, the Eagles tied the set at five before the Maroons went on a four-point run to take a 9-5 lead. Chicago held a 13-9 lead going into the first timeout before Emory went on a scoring run highlighted by kills from Dawson and junior Lily Martin. The Eagles were able to finish the set 28-26. The second set of the match was another back and forth battle with Emory holding a slight 15-14 lead over the Maroons at the first timeout. The set was constantly tied until the Eagles were able to pull away and take the set with kills from senior Carly Wallace and junior Sarah Luong. The third set was another close battle with the Eagles having a 14-13 lead at the first timeout. Kills from Meyer and Dawson highlighted the third set win.

In the second match against Rochester, the Eagles started strong taking an 18-14 lead into the first timeout of the set. The Eagles were able to take advantage of attack errors from the Jackets towards the end of the set to take the first set 25-21. The second set proved another strong showing from Emory with the Eagles taking an 8-4 lead into the first timeout before going on a four-point scoring run. Emory took a 12-6 lead before kills from Cail and Martin finished the set.

The Eagles were playing catch up in the third set after Rochester took an early lead, but played strong in the fourth set to take the match.

Emory will finish the first UAA Round Robin Tournament on Sunday, September 24 when they will face Carnegie Mellon at 12 pm in Cleveland, Ohio.
