Volleyball Drops First Match of the Season to Covenant

The No. 5 ranked Emory University volleyball team took their first loss of the season on Friday evening to the Covenant Scots in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.

The Eagles move to 14-1 on the season with the 21-25, 25-16, 22-25, 13-25 loss to the Scots (22-1). Despite dropping the match, junior Lily Martin posted 12 kills on the night, tying the fifth best of her career. Junior Deborah Hong also recorded 19 digs on the afternoon and sophomore Olivia Rabinowitz had 16 assists followed by 15 from sophomore Ioanna Copulos.

The first set saw a constant back and forth between the two teams with a tie at 11 in the middle of the first set. The Scots were able to take an 18-14 lead over Emory but kills from junior Madison Cail and sophomore Kaya Monrose brought the game back into a tie at 18. Covenant then took a 22-19 advantage before taking the first set 25-21.

Emory was on the lookout for a comeback in the second set starting with a 7-4 lead over the Scots. The scoring continued with kills from Cail and junior Alana Dawson to hold a 19-10 lead towards the end of the set. The Scots went a four-point scoring run but the Eagles went on one of their own to take the second set 25-16.

The third set was another back and forth battle between the Georgia teams with Covenant taking a slight 9-10 lead over Emory at the beginning of the set. With a 16-12 lead from the Scots, the Eagles went on a four-point run to tie the set a 16. The scoring continued from both sides but the Scots held onto their lead for a 25-22 win in the third set.

Covenant dominated the fourth set of the night taking a 5-1 lead before the first subs of the set. They held onto a 10-4 lead halfway through the set before jumping to a 16-9 lead. The Eagles were unable to answer and dropped the fourth set 25-13.

Emory will be back on the courts on Sunday, October 22 for the last UAA Round Robin tournament of the season. The Eagles will face Brandeis at 10 am followed by #12 WashU at 2 pm.
