Volleyball Reaches Regional Finals after Comeback Victory over Covenant

The Emory University volleyball team completed the comeback win over the Covenant Scots on Friday afternoon in five-set fashion to advance to the regional final on Saturday.

The Eagles improve to 26-2 on the season and defeated the Scots with the 22-25, 25-12, 20-25, 25-14, 15-12 victory. Junior Alana Dawson had an impressive day posting 19 kills in the Eagles' win, her second best this season while junior Lily Martin and senior Carly Wallace followed with 11 each. Junior Sarah Luong had a season-best 39 assists on the day while fellow junior Deborah Hong also had a season-best day posting 35 digs against the Scots.

The first set started in favor of Emory with the Eagles taking a 5-1 lead over Covenant to start the match. After jumping to a 10-7 lead, the Scots answered with seven consecutive points to take a 14-10 lead. The Eagles tried to make a comeback but the Scots kept their energy and took the first set 25-22.

The Eagles fought back in the second set taking an early 12-3 lead thanks to kills from Dawson and Martin. The offense remained hot for Emory with sophomore Kaya Monrose joining the game to give the Eagles a 19-7 lead towards the end of the set. The Scots weren't able to respond to Emory's offense and the Eagles took set two 25-12.

The third set was a back and forth battle between the two teams with seven ties before the Eagles took a 13-10 lead. The Scots were able to tie the set at 17 and ran with their lead taking the third set 25-20 looking to secure the win with a fourth set victory.

Emory wasn't ready to go home yet and fought hard in the fourth set. The Eagles took an early 11-5 lead heading into the first substitution of the set before eventually taking a 17-7 lead. The kills from Martin and Wallace continued at the end of the set and helped the Eagles force a fifth set.

The pressure was on to start the fifth set with neither team ready for their season to end. The Eagles were able to take advantage of numerous mistakes from the Scots' offense to take an early 8-2 lead before switching benches. After taking a 13-7 lead, Covenant answered with five straight points to return to a 12-13 deficit. The Eagles finished the set 15-12 to secure the win and advance to the regional finals.

The Eagles will face the winner of Berry/Trinity in the Mount Berry regional final on Saturday, November 18 at 5 pm with the winner advancing to the Elite Eight in Claremont, California.
